Subject: USS CHESAPEAKE: Prelude to a Physical

Scene: USS CHESAPEAKE: Sickbay
------------------------------

Lieutenant DawnFire to-Ennien, MD, was trying to piece together a research
proposal. Like all Sivaoans, she had a photographic memory and found that
her memory was more reliable than any other form of record-keeping.
Unfortunately, life in Starfleet involved records, files, reports, and many
other 'memory devices', necessary for those who were not blessed with a
Sivaoan's eidetic memory.

With her sensitive Sivaoan sense of hearing, DawnFire heard the loss hiss
of the Sickbay doors opening and looked up, her sky blue eyes blinking with
curiosity. A Romulan, bearing the rank insignia of a Lieutenant Commander,
took a few steps forward.

"Lieutenant Commander Avikar th'Tellan?" DawnFire politely inquired.

>	th'Tellan raised an eyebrow. "Plus my middle name is Murdock.
><Pause.> You don't watch the A - Team, do you."

DawnFire's golden ears flicked back sharply. What in Sretalles was the
Rihannsu referring to. The A-Team? Was that some sort of Federation or
Starfleet special force?

Deciding to ignore the remark, DawnFire (Sivaoans are *never* referred to
by their place name) introduced herself.

"I am Lieutenant Doctor DawnFire to-Ennien," the Siamese-patterned Sivaoan
spoke with a musical voice. "I'm sorry that Lieutenant Commander Catherine
Marie Ledoux cannot meet with you at the moment, so I will take care of the
preliminary details. Is that satisfactory, Lieutenant Commander Avikar
Murdock th'Tellan?"

>"Yeah, that's fine. I just came by to say that I couldn't. Well,
>see you later." th'Tellan paused as the Sivoan blocked his path. "I'm
>kidding. You can relax, Ennian."

DawnFire's golden tail began lashing as the Rihannsu butchered her name.
Sivaoans were *never* addressed in such a fashion. Each Sivaoan, after
completing their walk - a coming of age ceremony in which a group of
youngsters would travel from one Sivaoan camp to another - was entitled to
choose his or her own name. Each youngster would choose a name that he or
she liked, followed by to-, followed by the name of one of the Sivaoan
camps. The camp (or village) name chosen usually held some sort of
significance or was important to that individual in one fashion or another.
Names, therefore, were of extreme importance, and altering someone's name
without their permission is considered to be a grave insult. Addressing an
individual by the camp name that followed the to- was simply unheard of.

Taking a firm grip of herself, realizing that this Rihannsu, who was
quickly becoming an annoying tail-kinker, could not possibly be familiar
with Sivaoan custom, DawnFire managed to keep her temper.

>	"I prefer to be called by my full name, Lt Cmdr...."
>
>	"Fine, but call me th'Tellan. Otherwise, we'll be here till
>Christmas. Anyway, it was nice meeting you Lt Dawnfire t'Ennian."

DawnFire's tail ceased its lashing, but its burnished tip continued to
flick back and forth. Sniffing, she announced, "well, then we'll get
started."

>	"Let me guess. You want our time together to be as short as your
>stature."

Scene: USS CHESAPEAKE: Sickbay: CMO's Office

Doctor Ledoux was busy reviewing the reports from the medical drills that
had been run during her vacation. All in all, the vet was pleased with the
performance of her personnel. Doctor Donne was clearly an excellent
physician, well suited to the aCMO billet and Doctor Willingham was a
talented surgeon. As for Doctor DawnFire to-Ennien, well, she was young.
Perhaps all she needed was a bit of experience and seasoning.

>	Ledoux heard a crash outside her office. Rushing out, she saw
>DawnFire on one side of a sickbay bed, golden fur bristling.
>On the other side of the biobed was a Romulan that seemed familiar.
>Ledoux groaned, wincing inwardly, as the Romulan shouted,
>"Hey, looks like your temper's short, too!"
>
>	"Oh, very funny," DawnFire shouted. She was trying in vain to get
>around the bed that the Romulan was keeping between her.

Claws splayed, DawnFire was ready to do some serious damage.

Sensing that the situation was quickly getting out of control, Doctor
Ledoux stepped forward. "Enough!" she stated, projecting her voice so that
the two officers could not ignore her.

"Doctor DawnFire to-Ennien." Catherine turned towards the golden
fluff-ball that DawnFire had become, "would you please download the
Lieutenant Commander's file?"

Next, the vet turned towards the Romulan. Mentally sighing, she wished
that she did not have to deal with a member of that particular race. When
she thought about what the Romulans had done to Rich...

*Stop!* Catherine mentally admonished herself. A little shaken, she turned
toward the Romulan. Flustered, she blushed as she had to ask, "excuse me,
what did you say your name was again?"

>	"th'Tellan. Lt Cmdr Avikar th'Tellan."
>
>	The second officer. What was it about second officers and
>sickbay?

"All right," Catherine stated, carefully keeping a neutral expression.
"Please have a seat on the biobed."

Respectfully submitted,
