Subject: USS CHESAPEAKE: An Interesting Evening

MD 8.1600
Deck 2: Office of the XO

"Thank you, Counselor." Brennan accepted the proffered PADD, then
waved her to the seat across the desk. Tats-Marush sat down as
the Commander placed the PADD on the desk and stood, walking
toward the replicator.

"Anything to drink, Counselor?"

"A cup of raktajino would be nice, sir."

He nodded, and punched up a cup of raktajino for her and a cup of
hot chamomile tea for himself. He handed the Counselor her cup
and sat down at his desk. He sipped at bit of the tea, then,
putting the cup down on the desk, picked up the PADD and started
reading. A few moments later, he was looking up at the Counselor
again.

"I will be meeting with the Captain in about two hours to discuss
the subject. Have you any additional concerns that may not
necessarily be addressed in the report?"

***************

"Not necessarily. I think the report speaks for itself."

"Hmph." Brennan looked over the report more carefully. "Well, this
leaves Captain Bell with a big choice. Namely, what she wants in a
science officer."

"True. The report is quite thorough. LT Murray is frankly, a poor
administrator. She drives most of her subordinates to distraction.
She tends to be overcontrolling and overbearing. With luck, hopefully
I can make some progress with LT Murray, if she'll have me as a
counselor.

"Her a/SCI, LTJG Derek Fielding, on the other hand, is respected by
the other members of the department, and is better equipped to handle
the day to day chores of running the department. The FITREP suggests
an appropriate division of chores. Mr. Fielding will handle personnel,
and he will assign someone from each division of the Science Department
to form a testing committee. LT Murray feels that the members of the
Science Department have to keep up to date on developments in their
field and that they need to know shipboard emergency procedures thoroughly.
However, she tends to intimidate those she is testing.

"As a result, I've recommended that LT Murray will *monitor* the test
results and critique all of the work of the Science Department -- on
paper. Mr. Fielding will work with her in executing her changes, and
will be the "go between" person. Mr. Fielding and Mr. Murray will be ordered
to iron out their working relationship.

"During emergencies however, LT Murray remains extremely calm." Stavay
thought about the disastrous poker game, and continued. "She would
be *the* officer of choice on the bridge during an emergency." **She'd
probably show more cool that both of us put together**, thought the
Counselor, and Brennan had never lost his cool as far as Stavay knew.
"She is highly qualified in almost every field. She is an intelligent officer,
but needs to overcome her social difficulties. Given a reconstruction of
the Science Department, LT Murray can make a great contribution to the
CHESAPEAKE and should remain as Science Officer."

"Hmm." Brennan turned the PADD over. "Well, I'll be frank. Her difficulties
in dealing with people bother me. How can one be an effective officer --
how can one give orders and expect others to obey them -- if one cannot
deal with people?"

Stavay muttered, "Well, if giving orders is all you want from the SCI, Sir,
then LT Murray can certainly give orders, if you don't want the person
*taking* the orders to slowly go insane.  She is obeyed in the Department;
it's the *results* of her orders I worry about."

"Then you don't trust the SCI's judgment?", answered Brennan. **My, but the
man is thorough,** thought Stavay.

"I trust her judgment on the bridge and on Away Teams implicitly." **It's
her judgment *elsewhere* that I suspect.**

"Very well. Thank you for your time and hard work, Counselor. I'll report the
results back to the Captain and get back to you."

MD 9.0100
Sickbay:  Deck 12 --> Deck 6

Stavay completed her check off on the hypospray as LT Kirin looked
on. There were at least ninety or so things to check off. Indeed,
Stavay found it hard to realize that she had *forgotten* so much over
two years. She had already taken many of the exams again for re-certification
as a Registered Nurse. Her license was still valid until January of the
next year, but she would definitely feel out of place in a Sickbay until
she went through some of the battle drills and participated in the
CHESAPEAKE in-services.

Stavay removed her lab coat and emptied her pocket of hypofixes, vital
scanners, and other nursing bric-a-brac and left sickbay for the brief trip
back to her room. 0700, rise and shine.

Leaving the turbolift, suddenly, she saw it. A white form zoomed across the
floor.

She knew what it was. **Rattus Astrus**.

She had seen the beast before, on Shrevashal. It was originally a Terran
creature. A large, white colored rat about 18 inches long, not counting the
tail. It was a parasite that lived on Starships; free from natural predators,
it lived a very happy existence. A space rat.

<Come here, you little --- > Stavay was determined to catch this big, ugly
rat and asked a passing member of the science department for his
tricorder. She was going to catch this big pest...and find out if there were
any more rats on board. She configured the device for the space rat, which
was moving in no fixed direction to the 26 section of Deck 6. Engineering
would be informed. Life Sciences would be informed. And the Marine Deck...
*definitely* informed. The Goddess forbid there should be another Bunny
Incident!
