Love your site. Thanks

I was on the Daniel Boone by a twist of fate. A shipmate on the USS
James Madison was scheduled to transfer to the Boone as the Madison
was being decommisioned. His wife was having a baby, their first and
he would have missed it. The detailer let me take his orders and I
went to the Boone instead. One of the best decisions of my life. I
ended up going to BSY-1 school and on to the USS Columbus in Pearl
where I met my wife. Now I have two beautiful kids. If I hadn't taken
the transfer for a guy they nick named Flounder I would never have
made it to this point in my life.

Just found this web-site for the Boone. It is great. I served on the
commissioning crew(blue) and have wonderful memories of my time during
shake-down. Seattle, Hawaii, St. Thomas,Charleston, Polaris Point.
I still remember the "pink" sabot shots we made in Pearl and how some
guy's whites turned color. Made several patrols out of Guam before
going back to Dam Neck, Va. for "B" school. Put in for Scotland and
got sent right back to squadron 15 in Pearl where I made 3 more patrols
on the Grant.

I've always enjoyed reading about the submarine service and will never
forget the day my father brought me aboard to visit. Even though a
young child at the time...I remember my fathers pride and respect for
the USS Daniel Boone and those who served aboard her. Great website!

Served on the Boone (blue) 1987-91 in M-div. I remember Tom tom
Carothers (ET, right?). I've often wondered about my shipmates. Don
Hitner(MM), Tim Herren (EM), Rich "maddog" Maschke (EM), Tom Hoff(ELT),
Tim Snyder(MM),Bob Timm(ELT), are you out there?? Hey Mike Wheeler, I
think I signed your card, didn't I? Did you and the PutMan(MM) arrive
about the same time?? Maybe I'm thinking of "Smoking Joe" Wheeler(MM?).

Reported aboard the last few days of the overhaul in 1978. Was a
Chief Storekeeper back then. Rode the ship to Charleston made a couple
patrols and transfered to the Stonewall Jackson. Cdr Smith was the
Commanding Officer and I remember someone "stealing" the XO's door. Had
a great time onboard, good crew and lots of good memories.

John Kemker 26/Apr/2002:20:13:22
My connection with the USS Daniel Boone is arrives via a rather
interesting and twisty path.

A little over three years ago, I purchased a used SUV, in order to
accomodate my growing family (now four daughters, my wife and myself).
Since my family has always named our vehicles, the question came up as
to what to name the Suburban. Since one of my hobbies is flying large
rockets, and since the vehicle was a "Sub," it was decided that I
should start looking at names of "missile subs" to name the truck after.

I started searching for U.S. missile subs and came across the Daniel
Boone. This was a perfect fit, for my great-great-great-great-
grandfather was Daniel Boone. My truck now had a name.

Since then, I've had to sell the 'Boone, as the starter kept falling
off the diesel engine. (It did, after all, keep going for over 320,000
miles.) The next Suburban (diesel, also) was therefore named
the "Ghost of the Daniel Boone" by my oldest daughter.

Owning a truck named after the

I served on the blue crew from 1991 until May of 1993. I am
not "Smoking Joe" but he was one of the best "bubbleheads" that I ever
served with... I am still a MM1 and will retire as one since I am
retiring in February of 2003 with 21 years of service. Anyone of my
shipmates if you are in Norfolk in December of 2002,are welcome to come
to my retirement most likely at the Mariner's Museum in Newport News
Virginia. Email me at Emtmike1@bigfoot.com and when I finalize my dates
and all that goes with it, I will send you a formal invitation. I hope
there will be a reunion at a later date. Bye for now.

Juan Molina   19/Apr/2002:14:49:10
Although I am greatly honor to have served with my shipmates, I would
now give a few a scolding for using spic, wet-back, greaser, and beaner
remarks. I am retired now and I am a free man again and can fight
back.

Thanks for the site Terry! Would like to connect with any of the Gang
from our era. Can't find a trace of Walton, Palasik, Harvell, Weaver,
Bum, James Ray, David Hagar, Tim Anderson. Caught up with Difabio and
Bradley. Have never heard of any Reunions. I live in Orlando Fl. now,
would be a great place for one. Any interest in setting one up, e-Mail
me and we'll get it rolling. Too bad how the boats ended up. I read up
on the new Virginia class, sounds more like a video arcade. And No
Periscope to hang on! If you're an old Booner ever in the area, drop me
an Email.

I have never forgot the BOONE, we had a good time. After almost 16
years, what can I say. I was the "half-breed", half-corpsman/half-
machinist mate of the Blue crew, circ. 1983-1986. After being
medically retired, graduated from U.S.F. in Tampa, as an
anthropologist/archaelogist. Looked through the "guestbook", funny,
the only name I recognized was Larry "Purple" Hayes, did you ever make
E-2?? Just kidding. I still have my BOONE hat, and wear on the golf
course. Thanks for the memories.

followed by Shore Duty in Groton. After shore duty, I was assigned to

accept a job with General Dynamics (Electric Boat). After 6 years, I
accepted a position with Anteon Corporation supporting Marine Corps
Headquarters, Quantico, VA. I have been with Anteon for the last 10
years, and I live in Fredericksburg, VA. I was shocked to see a photo

kept turning down the temp in the crew's mess
...Huckleberry's cooking!!! (He ended up running the Mare Island golf

Enjoyed reading the comments left in the guestbook. I served on the
Boone from 1973 to 1978, Blue Crew, M-Div. Anybody ever hear anything
about MMCM Bobby Ray Cook? Chief Cook was M Div/Engineering LPO until
the boat went to the yards in Kittery in 1976. Lots of fond memories
of "being at sea", cannot say the yards were a fond time for me. Way
to much work for the crew and not enough help from the yard. Just
about killed us all . . . it would kill me today to try to live that
over again. I had health problems too . . . did not find out about it
until well after getting out of the Navy. Ended up on good drugs . . .
will be for the rest of my life. The Boone was the best time of my
life . . . and the worst. Best needs no explanation. Worst because
of my failing health. The Navy docs never figured out the problem.
Ended up in the Baptist Hospital in Houston before they found my
problem. Oh, well the only thing is, the health problems sure impacted
my last 2

I was the Autonetics tech rep on the first patrol of the Daniel Boone.
I was hoping to contact some of that crew as well as some of the Gold

To all,

I was a 'nuke' electrician and served on board the Boone from 1983-86.
I'd like to hear from any of the Blue crew folks, or any "Goldies" that
I served with in the Newport News shipyard...

wade a rutledge   04/Mar/2001:19:29:15
Served as a ping jockey on Boone Gold from 1983 until 1986 when she went
into the yards for core change. It's good to hear from everybody who's
been onboard and I see some names of folks I know. I'll be intouch.

Served as Electrical Officer, DCA -&- RC Officer overhaul -&- Blue Crew Feb
70 - Jul 72. Best crew -&- wardroom of any boat I served on. Seems like
the good guys served on both BOONE -&- EDISON - Shag Stratton, Jack
Ensminger, et al. Still keep in touch with many from that wardroom.

Bruce W Pedlow   03/Mar/2001:17:01:53

Just a note to any shipmates who were on Boone from Feb '72 thru
Sept '75 and remember Gene Edwards, our yeoman. Gene passed away
January 3, 2001 at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital after a 19 month fight
with small cell cancer. Gene retired as a Master Chief and served as
Command Master Chief at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard prior to his
illness. Admiral "Skip" Bowman and I represented Boone at a memorial
service for Gene on January 12th at the shipyard. Gene will be missed!

Blue Crew, Plank Owner, engineering dept. I was the boat's
photographer as well as a Nuke. Some may remember me poking
my cameras in their faces. I made only the first patrol before
transfer to shore duty. An unforgettable experience and an
unforgettable crew! I had a box of the raunchiest cigars anyone
ever smoked. But I sold them to Clark (seaman, electrician striker)
who in turn sold them to the exec (LCDR Lewis) for a buck each!
I wonder if they ever got that stench out of the wardroom!
Seems like every time I broke out a camera, the Captain, CDR Steele,
found a way to get in the picture!
Never forget the Soviet Trawlers outside the port in Guam when we
got underway Christmas morning, 1964. They were anxious to witness
the first Polaris Patrol in the Pacific.
So many great memories! The shakedown cruise, Hawaii, commissioning
party with Fess Parker in attendance. Would be great to hear from
anyone who sserved aboard the Boone!

Larry Pierce   27/Jan/2001:22:55:25
Served aboard the Boone in 1965 as a EODTM2(SS). One of the torpedo men
got sick on the Boone and I replaced him for the patrol. I was
stationed on the Proteus at the time and was previously (SS) qualified
on the Tecumseh.

Bob Chenier   22/Jan/2001:17:36:09
RC Division Chief onboard DANIEL BOONE from June 88 to May 92.

Allen Tuider   13/Jan/2001:11:07:28
Served onboard from February 1975-February 1979. Did 2 patrols on the
Gold crew, the Carribean op, the Kittery overhaul, DASO, and 1 patrol
on the Blue crew after. Left as an IC1(ss) (NUC). Retired in 1992 as an
EMC(ss) following tours on 634, 631, Idaho Falls, and 662.I really
enjoyed my tour on Boone, (especially the overhaul), and like the
demise of the rest of the "41 for Freedom" fleet , was saddened to hear
of her decommsioning. I am currently living in Joliet, IL and working
at a peaking power plant. P.S. What ever became of D. Boone's
flintlock rifle that used to be hanging at one time in the crew's mess
and later in the wardroom?--"Old ticklicker"

Byron Shag Stratto   10/Jan/2001:12:08:03

could ask for. Great Crew and great boat...LETS HAVE A REUNION!!!

Benjamin DeRosia   08/Jan/2001:21:29:45
Where in the world did you obtain the picture of the ship's office? I
don't remember that place looking anything like that. I still have the
key, and the door nameplate that I got in DECOMM. I also have the
ship's red stamp that we used to use to stamp service records with. I
have some other stuff like sheets of stickers that we had made up, the
25th anniversary bumper sticker that was made and some change of
command and the deact/decomm booklets. If you are interested in any of
this stuff email me with what you would like and I will see what I can
do.

John Pinkiewicz   05/Jan/2001:15:57:06

leave but I am sad to see it go.

An MT on the DB from 77 - 81, the gold crew. Anyone know where and/or
how to get a hold of MTC Grimm? Great site guys...seems just like
yesterday. Sail she may, but clean she must!

Faye Coats   08/Oct/2000:02:09:45
So glad to see this home page for the Daniel Boone. my late husband,
RM1(SS)Lonnie J. Coats, was on the commission crew and took her to
Hawaii. He was on the Boone's Blue Crew. He transfered off in July 1967
to instructor at FLTSUBTRAFAC-FORD ISLAND, HAWAII. Lot of great
time,great friends. Lonnie retired in 1979 as a RMCS(SS).

Great Site!
I was the "Doc" on the Blue Crew during '91 - '93 and for a short time
part of the combination crew. Its good to see that there is a place to
reach some of our shipmates. Would be glad to hear from anyone from
either crew.

Byron Shag Stratto   23/Sep/2000:11:22:29
I was fortunate enough to be on the commissioning crew and made 6
patrols on the Blue Crew....
This had to be "The best crew and wardroom in the Fleet" bar none...
And such a great boat as a result...
I have many commissioning pics and Pearl Harbor Pics (official Navy) if
you have any desire for them....
Thanks for the site, and keep up the good work...
I hope to hear from some old shipmates from this...Especially Frank
Boone, QM1(ss) at the time...

Great Page. The Daniel Boone was my first Sub. Qualified as a FTB 2 in
1969 transfered in spring of 1971 as a FTB 1 to NESEP at the University
of Utah. Took the ship through the overhaul in Newport News and the
PEM DASO at the Cape. Lots of hrad work and lots of fun with an
excellent crew. Good to see some of my shipmates signed in to the
guestbook.

I served and slaved with the mighty Blue crew on SSBN 629 the oldest and the finest. Ha-ha Remember that one. I checked onboard April of 92 and was on until both crews became one big happy family!!! Then went to the USS Billfish (SSN-676). I was the red headed nub from Chattanooga Tennessee. If you remember me, give me a holler.

don winkle   29/Aug/2000:19:43:19
I was a MT on the Boone, (Gold) from 1980 until 1983. Probably my
biggest claim to fame was tricking our doc into blowing san #5 onto
himself. Due to a faulty pressure gauge it had close to 100 PSI in it
before it let go. Sorry Doc, if your out there,…..you should have
known better,… you were qualified weren’t you ? Later I was awarded a
NAM for working 50 hours straight on a liquid spring leveling system
the day/night before a missile move. Of course I did it for God,
Country and the American way,…..the fact that my girl friend was
showing up the next day had nothing to do with it. I live in Northern
California and spend a month or so a year on Goat Island SC,
(Charleston Area). If any of you former booneheads want to get
together drop me a line. Cool site.

Mick Crawford FTB3(   24/Aug/2000:18:10:55
First boat I qualified on. Went aboard in '68. E.R. VanHoof was CO.
Made the last 2 patrols before Poseidon conversion in '69. Went
through the Panama Canal and around to Newport News. Saw a couple
names in the guest book I recognized. Jeff Nubbe was one. Quite a
drinker in those days. I think he and Bill Santoni went on to the 620
Gold crew as I did. Thanks for putting the web site together. Looks
good. Brings back a lot of memories.

Good to find a page for the Boone. Was in the Nav shop 83-85 gold -&-
Newport News, Then on to Range Sentinel. Too bad about those poor slobs
on the Kursk. "Enemy's" or not, they were fellow bubbleheads and they
lived our worst nightmare. Mr Spruell, wherever you are, remember the
time the COW flooded both DCT's and WE sunk like a rock? Was
disappointed to learned the boat met such an undignified end. Those were
the days, right? If you're an old Booner and headed to Orlando, drop me
an Email.

Great site for a great boat. I served aboard from Oct 63 until April 67.
Made first 5 Gold patrols. Started as FTG3(SS) and left as FTG1(SS). I
remember well the XO's door and with great joy the brass train whistle.
Anybody else remember the train whistle. I came to the Boone from a WWII
diesel boat. The USS Carbonero SS337 out of Pearl. What a difference !
Keep up the good work.

Jeff Nubbe   03/Aug/2000:15:45:36
USS Daniel Boone, such a long time ago. I started as mess cook and left
the boat as STS2(SS). Does anybody know what happenend to Ted Reynolds?
He was FTG1(ss). Last time I saw him was in 72 and he had re-enlisted
and was stationed on a Destoyer Tender in San Diego. Also wondering
about an A ganger named Beasly from WY and Stover,a radioman from TX?

I enjoyed the comment by some gold crew sailor about Davy Jones Locker,
yes the blue crew owned that place too.

Peter A. Malik III   30/Jul/2000:20:16:51
This is really cool! Your homepage was referred to me by Rick Tebeabu.
We served as Sonar Techs together on the Daniel Boone from 1989 to 1983.
I'm glad he recommended the site to me. I've often wondered what became
of my old shipmates. I'm no longer in the Navy, and reside in
Philadelphia, PA. where I work as a Geologist for a mid-size
environmental firm. I miss the old Sonar gang, and some of the great
times we had at sea. I'll definately refer all the guys I keep in touch
with from the Boone of the site. Keep up the good work!

Hello Shipmates,
I served on the Boone from about Jan 91 to Dec 93 or something like
that. I left right before the crews became one. I was on the Blue
crew and worked in the Sonar Div (STS2). Nice website Terry! If
anyone served with me and would like to contact me please do!

like to hear from any of the old Nav gang from the Poseidon conversion
yard period.

Just saying hi to all of the Boone sailors, I was stationed onboard the
Proteus at Guam in 1967 and 1968 as a TM2 in the torpedo shop. If your
torpedo was hot, straight and normal, I probably didn't work on it but
if it was erratic it was probably mine.

Great site. Glad to be back onboard. Served two patrols on Gold
Crew, 67/69. First boat, earned my dolphins and still as proud of them
as I was when I drank them at Polaris Point. Did the Daniel Boone own
Davey Jones Locker or did we just live there???? Was onboard during
the "Rapid Fire" and subsequent receipt of the NUC.
Radioman "A" School and then the John Adams SSBN-629 (G) 69/71.
Fond, fond, memories of both boats and brothers of the deep. Looking
forward to hearing from fellow crew members.......Rgds/bs

interest in old commands. Any old crewmembers feel free to email me.

Ken Ski Julkowski   22/Apr/2000:00:27:46
Stationed aboard from 6/18/63 to 8/15/67. I rode her down the launching
ways and eventually made six patrols with the Blue crew. I was
discharged as an MT1(SS).

Bob Wright   21/Apr/2000:01:12:36
I served on the Blue Crew from 1964 to 1966. The only person I
recognized on the crew list was Darryl Olson, MT2(ss). We partyed
together and shared rent in the house with white carpets in Kailua. I
wrecked his Tr-4 crossing the Pali. Sorry, Ole!!! Anyone who shared
the rent in Kailua, get in touch.

Bob McDonald (Mac)   20/Apr/2000:13:08:21
Served Nov 80 to Sep 85 MT2/SS. I was there when SUBRON16 was mooned
from the bow. Best event of the tour. Costello, stop that!

Rick Brady   13/Apr/2000:17:21:50
Hey, It was great seeing a couple of guys names on this website that I
served with from 1975-1980 (Blue). The Boone was a great boat which
gave me many good memories from Portsmouth, N.H., Holy Loch, Scotland,
South Carolina, Cocoa Beach, Florida, and finally Kings Bay Georgia. I
can't say it wasn't rough but I'll never forget those days and the crew
I served with. Patrick St. Romain has a website also of the Boone. I
had sent pictures to it. Check it out: stromain@flash.net. The
decommissioning was a blast and became an alcoholic haze because of the
partying. Anyone have any photos of the Boone's last days in the
scrapyard? Please let me know. It's a damn shame but I would like to
have them for old times sake. I'm still keep in touch with IC Rodney
Swisher, Nuc Joe Lindgren, and IC Norman (SKI). Hey everyone DO NOT
FORGET TO BUY A BRICK FOR THE DETERRENT PARK MEMORIAL. KEEP OUR
MEMORIES ALIVE!!!

Steve Olfs   13/Apr/2000:13:27:42
It has been a very long time. I served aboard the Boone from 1974
through 1978. I was an "A-ganger".

Reading other shipmate's comments (those I served with and those I
didn't) has reminded me of a lot of things only submariners know. Who
knew that thinking of "boring holes" in the ocean would make me smile.

I look forward to hearing from others who find this page.

Al Standish The Carriage Inn 07/Apr/2000:21:48:44
Served in BLUE crew '63 to '65 making five patrols as COMM/ANAV, NAV

I was hoping to find a website for the "Dan'l Boone". I finally
stumbled across it.

One note of interest, Lt. J.G. Newman (ass't Nav./Comm Officer) Blue
Crew won the contest for designing the Ships Patch as it is seen on your
site.

And everyone is right, it was the best ship around at the time. Inlaid
tiles in the waterways and all.

I had great memories navigating the Pacific Ocean for the first time on
patrol, and nothing plotting right....Remember Lcdr. O'Sullivan???????
