The Flight Deck for April 2002, Issue 107
From the Bridge:
It's April already? I've pondered the speed at which months
fly by before, but I'm still left a bit dazed by it!
The Starbase 06 Away mission to the Louisville Science Center went
off well; 5 ships and the Admiralty Board were represented. A good
time was had by all....and was there anyone who *didn't* buy one of
those little minature Louisville Slugger bats?
Next up is the plane wash at Grissom Air Force Base. Barring any
last-minute complications, we're scheduled for 10am on Saturday,
April 20th. As always the museum will feed us. I'm told that
several members of the Reliant and a contingent of cadets from my
old high school's ROTC unit will be joining us.
The following day, Sunday, April 21st, we're heading on a
movie away mission to see "The Scorpion King." We plan to
hit the showing closest to 1pm at the Showplace 16 on the
South side of town. Exact time to be passed along.
Hope to see everyone at the wash...and the first one to spray
me with a hose will find themselves transferred to Medical!

Grandfathers are First in Space
By Marcia Dunn, AP Aerospace Writer
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) - The world's first pair of spacewalking
grandfathers ventured outside Saturday to finish bolting a giant
girder to the international space station.
"We've got the Silver Team on television," one of their fellow
astronauts joked as Jerry Ross and Lee Morin floated out the hatch.
Ross and Morin had 54 bolts to loosen or tighten and almost as many cable
connectors to hook up on the 44-foot girder, continuing the difficult
work begun Thursday by two of their space shuttle Atlantis colleagues.
This was the eighth spacewalk for Ross, who is making a
record-setting seventh space flight and is NASA's most
experienced spacewalker. Morin is on his first shuttle mission.
"Things look a little bit different," Ross said.
The space station has grown considerably since he
helped put the first two pieces together in 1998.
Their crewmates nicknamed Ross and Morin the Silver Team because of
their grandfatherly status. Despite their relatively young age —
Ross is 54, Morin is 49 — they have four grandchildren between them.
"How do you like this fraternity so far,"
astronaut Steven Smith asked Morin from inside.
"It's pretty wild," Morin replied.
Atlantis and its crew of seven arrived at the space station
earlier this week for construction work that will require four
spacewalks. The three space station residents were thrilled
to finally have some company after four months in orbit.
"I'm just so happy to see other faces," station astronaut Daniel
Bursch said Friday. And other food, too. Bursch and his orbiting
companions had barbecued beef on the menu, with country and western
music for entertainment, on the eve of Spacewalk No. 2.
Before the shuttle crew arrived, Bursch, Carl Walz and their
Russian commander, Yuri Onufrienko, had taken up a new sport.
"We have some foam balls that we try to throw the length of the
station and really haven't been too successful so far. But that's
kind of what we do for fun," Bursch said. "Of course, we play with
our food like every good astronaut. Carl's great on the keyboard, he
has a keyboard up here that he plays. And we also watch movies."
Bursch said the space station's movie collection
includes all of the "Alien" films.
As for his 2001 tax returns, Bursch said his wife has requested
an extension. Walz said his wife already has filed their taxes,
because "she's sort of in charge while I'm gone."
Bursch, Walz and Onufrienko will remain in orbit until June.
Their 189-day mission will set a U.S. space endurance record.

The Rules of Life
1. Never give yourself a haircut after three margaritas.
2. You need only two tools. WD-40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move
and it should, use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the tape.
3. The five most essential words for a healthy, vital
relationship "I apologize" and "You are right."
4. Everyone seems normal until you get to know them.
5. When you make a mistake, make amends immediately.
It's easier to eat crow while it's still warm.
6. The only really good advice that your mother ever
gave you was, "Go! You might meet somebody!"
7. If he/she says that you are too good for him/her, believe them.
8. Learn to pick your battles; ask yourself, 'Will this matter
one year from now? How about one month? One week? One day?'
9. Never pass up an opportunity to pee.
10. If you woke up breathing, congratulations! You have another chance!
11. Living well really is the best revenge. Being
miserable because of a bad or former relationship just
might mean that the other person was right about you.
12. Work is good, but it's not that important.
13. And finally ... Be really nice to your friends. You never
know when you are going to need them to empty your bedpan.
