Shehan K’aius was born on Vulcan to parents of Romulan heritage. He was brought up in a small community of expatriate Romulans who have gathered on Vulcan over the years. Some of them are on Vulcan because they have been exiled from the Empire. Others have come because they are unificationists, Romulans that hope to see the two people reunited again. The community is small but slowly growing.
Shehan’s parents are unificationists and have vigorously guided their son towards the study of science. Their goal was to have a visible symbol of the unification in a Romulan graduate of the Vulcan Science Academy.
As a child Shehan was unruly and to instill discipline they sent him to learn Tal’ Shaiya a Vulcan system of mental and martial training. It taught him many good things the most important of which was self discipline and control of his emotions. The study of Tal’ Shaiya did bring one problem, he would rather practice his martial training and play Romulan sports than hit the school books. Both of his parents are scientists and had little patience for his lack of zeal for the subject.
In his schooling with Romulan children he was found to be more advanced than his peers. Since he was 10 years old he was schooled with Vulcan children his own age. At first it was a struggle and he lagged behind but due to hard work and dedication he placed himself firmly in the mainstream of his fellow students.
At his graduation he received an honorable mention in the field of Xeno-zoology (the study of alien fauna). He then scored high enough on his entrance exams to enter the Vulcan Science Academy.
A Romulan Ambassador’s son who was visiting the facility, nearly caused Shehan to be expelled from the academy. Shehan was quietly studying when he felt a bitter hate and contempt hit him. Like most on Vulcan he was familiar with bursts of others emotions but this was different, it seemed directed at him. He looked up to see a sneering face. The sneer belonged to the young Romulan, he was dressed in Galactic chic style and was actually physically looming over Shehan. The ambassador’s son was certain that anyone raised among ‘soft Vulcans’ would take any insult or endure any outrage. He was wrong. The Ambassador’s son grabbed Shehan by the shoulder and all of his emotions were laid bare to Shehan. In his anger and surprise Shehan struck the Ambassador’s son. It took all of his parents and even his teacher’s influence to keep him in the Academy. He was suspended for the rest of the academic year and he spent the time coming to grips withhis Mental Abilities.
Like many Romulans he is an empath and telepath, unlike other Romulans he has been brought up in an environment where he could develop these abilities. He is a considerably weaker telepath than most Vulcans however he has excelled in his empathic studies because he is not afraid to experience emotion. He has learned to shield his emotions and thoughts from others as is simple courtesy among Vulcans.
He still managed to graduate among the top twenty five percent of his class. He tried applying to several Scientific Foundations. His skills were such that he was sure he would gain acceptance at least on the ground floor. He was denied at every turn. After a year of fruitless applications and interviews he sought other options. Against his parent’s wishes he applied to the Starfleet Academy and was immediately accepted.
At Starfleet Academy he was a good Cadet and an excellent student. He did his Thesis on Terraforming Venus using chemical and biological means and it is currently being studied by the Federation as a safer alternative to the Genesis Project.Fresh from Graduation he is looking forward to his berth on the USS Maelstrom.
The rest is still to be written...............
