There have been several check-ins at the web site QuarterDeck since the last news letter. ( See emails and sign ins below.)

Mr. Tyrone Miller - 63-67 - former Operations Officer is the first Officer to come aboard.

Electricians Mate Jerry Davis - 56-62

Sonarman Al Rikard 61-64

IC Alton Silver 1960

Storekeeper Bob Mcdermott 66-69

Supply (Barber) James Wimbish 65-69 (Didn't leave an email address in the Guestbook.   If anybody hears from James, have them send me his address)

Current Web Site Status:
As many of you already know, the web site was put  on Geocities, because it was a freebie.  We've  accomplished getting it listed by all the search engines.  However, there are a few problems, which are more than apparent to most of you.  First are the annoying ads. Second, Geocities has  come up with a policy which makes me have to up/download stuff through their web site, . . instead of using my FTP program.  That is a giant pain.  It also prevents me from making current backup copies of the site. Those would be needed if their servers ever crashed and they lost our data.  Lastly, the way geocities is set up, if the site is accessed to many times in a one hour period, it shuts down for the rest of the hour.  (These are some of the prices you have to pay for "free")

In the not too distant future, I am going to put the web site on its own server, with its own domain name.  At that time, the web address will be http://usscookapd130.com  When the Assn. is formed, I will transfer it to the ownership of the Assn.

The transition will be smooth, because we will leave the geocities site up, . . with a redirection to the new site. It will take about six months  to get the new site listed with the search engines.

One of the advantages of putting the site on its own server is that it will allow us to use data base programs.  Those will allow us to run our newsletter from the site, put in a search system which locates former crew by name, year, div, etc.,

Chat Room    Not too far down the road, I will be installing a live Chat Room on the Web Site.  We can schedule live chats on the Message boards, or you can contact someone you would like to chat with, and arrange for them to meet you in the chat room at a certain day/time.

Emails of Interest:
Some of these are emails; some are entries in the "Personel Office" (You will see where the format asks a question and the person supplies the answer.  These are emailed to me from the web site in this fashion.)  I have removed some data from the emails;  notes about photos and such that are being sent to me.  Pardon me for publishing everything, but I am sure that every bit of this information means something to somebody someplace.  It all adds to the ship's human history. It is also a good place to display email addresses.  Thus making it  possible for you guys to contact each other.

Hello Andy. I have a vague recollection of a taller thin guy named
Anderson. I hope it is you. It appears we were on the USS Cook about
the
same time. I reported aboard in November 1963 as a 90 day wonder, and
left
four years later in July, 1967, about the same time as you did. I was
Operations officer for the last two years.

IF this msg reaches you , please check in and we can swap stories.

Now you gone and done it! Tallking about our old ship got me looking back through my file of papers from the COOK. I compiled a list of the officers that served on board from December 1963 when I reported aboard to July 7, 1967 when I left for discharge. I believe the list is about 99% accurate as to full names and actual officers aboard. I don't have their exact dates of service but estimated the minimum dates aboard.

I have not been in contact with any of them since, except the following:
1. James Dowdy was last known to be living in Woodland Hills as of about the late 70s.
2. Marvin Johnson last lived in Goleta, CA, in the early 90s just outside of Santa Barbara. He is a computer engineer.
3. Pete Roder, Exec Officer most of the time was last known to be CO of Treasure Island in the San Francisco bay area in the mid 80s. I believe the govt may have turned the island over to the city by now. I don't know where he is.

I recall the Chu Lai incident fairly well. I have included a summary of it and the list of officers in the attached Word 97 files.

I have a vague recollection of seeing that ashtray in the wardroom on the port side. Since I smoked at that time, I often used it when watching movies in the wardroom. I hope some old fart off the COOK got it from ebay.

Somewhere I have a few photos from my COOK days. Nothing spectacular. I also have a good colorized photo of the Cook sailing out of San Diego past Point Loma. I recall being OOD watching the heliocopter who took the picture and later bought it. It is mounted in my office. I also have a small plaque gift from the wardroom when I was relieved of duty as Ops Officer. I have since misplaced or lost a bronze "E" plaque that was very heavy and cannot recall what it was for except probably a commemorative plaque for the battle efficiency award we earned.

When I was aboard, one of the officers wrote a ship's history. I think it was CO Griffin who suggested it be done. Eventually it will show up and save us all a lot of time on the Cook's history up to about 1967 or 1968.

I remember the QM's very well. I'm glad to hear you were good friends with some of them. I did some amateur boxing in high school and challenged QM Cardoza to a match on the fantail. We went at it for about one minute before he gave me a bloody nose and I quit. I also remember Billie Waymire who was so fast with flags and lights doing morse code. And Newsome also. They were good guys. I knew most of the guys in my operations and deck departments. I knew the engineering people least of all.

I think it is very commendable of you to establish the site. I know many people will be beholden as they locate old friends and attend reunions. I thought about doing it myself but I am not good with chat rooms, or digital photos, or websites. My son was trying to help me set up a COOK site as I looked for information before your site was up. Then he found yours and prompted me to contact you first. I would have had to start from scratch. It looks like you might be the best man for the job. Many of the officers, and probably crew, who spent little time aboard will probably not have much interest, but people like me who spent their entire 4 year service on one ship will surely be.

I'm looking forward to getting your newsletter.

And drop the Mister stuff. That stuff should stay behind with the service.
Your friend Ty Miller

The following history written by Tyrone Miller:
USS Cook personnel

Chu Lai incident
Per Tyrone Miller, Officer of the deck at the time:
William Fuhrman and Richard H. Langford were the two enlisted men killed at Chu Lai. I don’t recall a third person killed. I later traced both their names off of the Vietnam Veterans memorial in D.C. Their names are located on the marble panel just to the right of the center of the memorial, about two feet from the bottom.

Fuhrman was from the Chicago area and a torpedoman first class assigned to look after our depth charges. Fuhrman took a copper jacketed bullet while upriver on the ships boat with either the seal or Marine recon team. Our Captain’s gig brought him back to the ship. Langford was already dead in another boat and Fuhrman died enroute to a hospital in Danang while onboard the chopper that was sent by the Iowa Jima I believe, to pick him up from the COOK. The Iowa Jima had heard our general broadcast request for medical help and dispatched the jet assisted chopper to us. Somehow the twisted copper jacket from the bullet was returned to the ship.

I recall Fuhrman very well as I loaned him a sport jacket to use to take a female Wave out to dinner. She had been ordered to the Cook by mistake and Captain Griffin and I, as Public Affairs Officer, made a big deal out of it by notifying the press, getting her on a local news channel interview and taking her for a ride in the harbor in the Captain’s gig. Fuhrman was a good sport about taking her to dinner and getting his picture in the paper with the girl.

As best as I can recall, Langford was detailed from one of the other ships that were in our squadron on this particular Westpac trip, possibly the Mt. McKinley.

I don’t recall a third death but remember that one boatmen took a round in his helmet that circled around inside and dropped down in the bottom of the boat. He was not injured at all. I think his name was Beauregard, a deck hand. I was OOD at the time the incident occurred.

The following officers served during 1963 to 1967 when I, Tyrone Miller was aboard. I believe it is probably 99% correct. I inserted approximate years they were known to be there with their serial number and designators, which came off of collateral duty rosters I still have. 1105 was a line designator for those eligible for command at sea. The “Supply Corp” designator is 3105, which makes them ineligible for command at sea. I suspect 1100 is for line officers who were “regular Navy” or those who graduated from Annapolis, versus those from Officer candidate school (OCS) commissions, known as “90 day wonders”, such as myself, who were designated 1105.

My name is Bob McDermott. I served aboard the Cook from 12/63 to 8/66.
Originally I was a Deck Ape. Later I went to Supply & left the ship in
Subic
Bay in August of 1966 as an SK3. The reason I left was that I was being
flown State side for discharge.

I was a Pointer in the 5" during the Ambush that Vic Moshier mentions.
Two
of the coxswains during that incident were a guy named Stogsdale. I
thing he
was from St. Louis, & David Youtz. Stogsdale took a bullet through his
helmet, He recovered it in his shirt once back aboard ship. I believed
he
was only grazed. A sailor who was killed was a TM3 by the name of
Furhman, I
believe. He was TAD to the ship.

Does he
have an E mail address. Chief Brown was a Chief EM I believe. We stood
many
a Quarter deck watch together. He kept me laughing, with his question
"Who's
the Who". He also got me in to bars in SD before I was 21. Cardoza I
remember from my days in the pilot house. Christopher: real tall, he
always
told me, he was part Indian & would point out his high cheek bones.
I also recently heard from Don Tetley. He just got back Thailand.

Hopefully, we can get some of the UDT and SEAL guys to send in some photos and a little history about the operations they were involved in on the Cook.  After all, that is what the Cook was all about.

The Wardroom ASHTRAY

You may have read about it here or seen its' photos on the Crew's photo page.  Yes, an "old fart" did buy it.  ME!  My Ebay user name is "utahgun".  Three years ago, when I was new to the internet, I saw the Cook's Ships Plaque go across the Ebay auction block.  I assumed it was being purchased by a former crew member.  After the auction was over, I tried to contact the high bid winner.  They never replied back.  That was when I realized there are lots of folks out there collecting military stuff. Things which they have no emotional ties too.  I decided that no Cook item would escape me again.  With a little luck, someday the owner of that plaque will contact the web site and offer to sell it to us.

The ashtray is my gift to the USS Cook APD-130 Assn. which I hope we will be able to form in the not too distant future.  ANDY

The USS Weiss's ships plaque was just auctioned off on Ebay. I caught it after the auction was over and notified the USS Weiss Assn.  I have been in contact with the current owner. He is just a collector.  When I asked him if he would sell it to them, he said not at this time, but possibly down the road.
