Prior to the launching of the USS Charlotte, SSN 766, in October 1993, the USNSR, USSUBVETS WWII, and the citizens of Charlotte borrowed a miniature SSN submarine from the Charleston Naval Shipyard, pulled it down the main street in Charlotte on a flat bed truck and held a mock christening in uptown Charlotte. Charlotte's former Mayor John Belk's wife, Claudia, had the honor of smashing the Champagne bottle across the bow, leaving a dent in the sub's nose!

16. On June 6, 1994, the U.S. Postal Service issued the first submarine stamp with the pictorial cancellation in Charlotte, N.C. The pictorial cancellation was designed by Oliver Thompson and used for 30 days only. Oliver and Terry hold the first exhibit of the World War II Commemorative Stamp.
