K'Vort Class Light Cruiser

The Klingon Navy had great difficulting in designing a successor to the B'Rel class Bird of Prey. The small ship was proving so successful that it continually bettered the designs intended to replace it. Finally, the Klingon Navy bit the bullet and accepted they had got it just right with the B'Rel, and instead of developing an all new class, sought a way of developing the venerable design to make it more effective.

The K'Vort class light cruiser was the outcome of that line of reasoning. The Navy design boards felt that the simplest and best way of improving the B'Rel was to scale the design up, and as a result the K'Vort is nearly identical in external appearance to the B'Rel, but is three times larger. The extra space has been put to good use by increasing the firepower and shield strength of the design - while the increased internal dimensions mean there is a great deal more space for crew quaters and provisions.

The K'Vort started replacing the B'Rel in front line service as soon as it became available, but never entirely superceded it, as the B'Rel could be manufactured faster and more cheaply, and the K'Vort also sacrificed a good deal of the B'Rel's agility. Recently, the K'Vort has started to be relegated to second line duties, but it remains a formidable and numerous opponent.
