I have used a few other logic courses like Reasoning and Thinking Skill
Vol. 1 and various others in the past. I ran across this Logic course
quite by accident looking into Latin courses and what I found I liked!
This is an excellent logic instruction book for say 7th or 8th grade and
up.
While the other mentioned course is good, it is set more for elementary
level or the second stage of learning in the Trivium. This course is
simple yet a more in depth course of logic. The lessons are short lasting
only a week. In fact, they suggest that you finish book I in less then one
semester so that more time can be allotted to book II. This will give you
a full year course in traditional logic.
Why teach logic if you aren’t following the Trivium or a classical
approach in your homeschooling? Because logic is a absolutely necessary
for a good foundation in learning. Reasoning, thinking and analyzing are
fundamental skills that children need in order to continue to pursue
learning on their own. Knowing that we strive towards a goal where our
children learn on their own, teaching logic seems a must. When we also
consider that we want our children to have a strong Biblical worldview,
and one that they can defend, traditional logic again seems a must.
Even if your kids weren’t going to be philosophers or join a local debate
team, I would at least give them the first semester worth of this logic
curriculum. It will build good thinking skills that any employer would be
happy to have in your kids as the mature.
Some definitions of logic are the science of order, the defense against
trickery, science of right thinking, directing the mind toward truth, or a
distinction between correct and incorrect reasoning.
The answer key is essential here so don’t skimp on that. Being that
Memoria Press sells the whole sets at a cheaper rate then buying things
separately it is to your advantage to go ahead and buy the whole set. This
would apply to the Logic as well as the Latin courses.
Visit the website to request a catalog or to see sample pages of their
Logic and Latin curriculums. The articles on their site are very good
reads for those of you considering a formal Logic or Latin course.
