- His National Team Games - Manfred Manglitz' career in the National Team!
Overview: Manfred Manglitz was born on August 3, 1940. He was one of the reasons why the underdog Meidericher SV became Vice Champion of the Bundesliga in its 1963 inaugural season. He showcased brilliant reactions and dominated the penalty box with his superior ability to anticipate crosses. The fans loved him not only for his spectacular flights in the goal, but also for his quick wit, which earned him the nickname "Cassius." He was also the first Bundesliga keeper ever who scored a goal in a league game. His "big mouth" caused him trouble with the German team coach Schoen who refused to nominate "Cassius" after he demanded the starting spot in the National team.
In 1969, he transfered to his home team 1.FC Koeln and his fantastic performances could no longer be ignored by the stubborn Schoen. He played two more games for Germany and although he was generally seen as being Germany's best goalkeeper, he was only selected as a backup for the 1970 World Cup. His frustration with this injustice ended his international career.
In 1971, he was one of the kingpins of the Bundesligaskandal and was punished for his involvement with two life time bans from ever playing professional soccer again. In 1982, he emigrated to Spain.
