Last month I was at Blockbuster trying to find a good 'thinking
man' film, when I came across one entitled, simply and most alluringly,
p
(a Greek letter pronounced 'pie' which, to those who've never
taken a geometry course, represents the shortest distance around
a circle divided by the longest distance across it).
Reading the blurb on the back, it would seem this movie was about
a man who went mad trying to figure out some great truth that
was encoded in this enigmatic number. Although I didn't end up
renting the video, it did set me to thinking about the nature
of Infinity (which was pretty much the point, so why spend $7.50?)
It soon became clear to me that p
contains not just one truth encoded in it, but that it is actually
possible to find a record of anything that ever was written,
anything that ever will be written, and anything
that ever could be written, hidden within it's infinite
recesses of decimals.
To
understand how this is possible, we must start with an ancient
Kabbalistic idea know as gematria,
whereby we create a mapping system of letters to numbers such
as:
1=A,
2=B, 3=C, ...
So,
using this encryption system to spell the word 'KIND', we would
write the numbers:
11,
9, 14, 4 or 119144
Now,
this is a fairly simple system of encypherment. Given the difficulties
humanity has had to overcome to detangle the 'Secret Code' of
life so far, it is unlikely that it would be written so overtly.
Therefore, let's add a twist to our encryption technique to make
it a tad more esoteric, such that we allow the addition of any
multiple of 26 (a full alphabet length, similar in concept to
octaves in music) to the letter's value first.
For
instance, A=1, but adding 26, we get A also equal to 27.
Adding 2X26=52, we allow that A may also be represented by the
number 53,
then, increasing the multiple of 26 integrally, we will also allow
79, 105, 131, 157, etc.
This
can easily be expressed in a mathematical notation known as the
MOD function (which gives the remainder when you divide two numbers
and can be found on the Windows Calculator when it is set to scientific
mode). Therefore, the cypher system we are selecting is:
If
any number (x) MOD 26 equals 1, that number (x) represents the
letter A, ..., etc.
(see table below).
Taking
our word 'KIND' once again, we could now write the number as
K
= (5x26)+11 = 141 (141 MOD 26 = 11 = K)
I = (22794x26)+9 = 592653 (592653 MOD 26 = 9 = I)
N = (226843x26)+14 = 5897932 (5897932 MOD 26 = 14 = N)
D = (14793324378x26)+4 = 384626433832 (384626433832 MOD 26 = 4
= D)
or,
putting it together (to hide it from the heathens, of course),
we have
KIND
= 1415926535897932384626433832
Which,
as we well know, are the first 28 decimals in the expansion of
p:
3.1415926535897932384626433832...
Now,
all this may seem a bit contrived, and that's because it is. As
is obvious, the decimals of p
may be split any number of ways, for instance
14-15-9-26-5
or N-O-I-Z-E.
The
point we must realize is that, due to its infinite nature, p
can be split to say anything we choose. Whatever 'truth'
we decide to decode from the decimals we see that, given that
we have 26 letters in our language, we can expect whatever one
we opt to write next in the story to take, on average, 26 decimal
places to be represented. For instance, taking just the first
32 decimals of p (which is
as many as I could manage, using the MOD function of the (30)
two-bit Windows calculator) we get the following:

As
we see, we are able to represent over half our alphabet in the
first 32 decimals of p. Although
it may seem burdensome to say that each letter can be expected
to take an average of 26 digits before it can be represented,
it wouldn't matter if we decided to take ten trillion trillion
decimals before we allowed it to be represented, we could still
decode from the decimals of p,
not only everything ever written, but everything that could ever
possibly be written. We could then continue to write this
same message ad nausium afterward. Or we could choose to
compose any other fib we fancied, in any number of variations...
'til kingdom come.
Furthermore,
we did not necessarily have to chose the English language for
our decryption of the 'Secret Code'. We could just as easily have
chosen the Hebrew alphabet, and used MOD 22 as our function, instead
of MOD 26. We could also have chosen a much simpler alphabet of
just four letters, say: C, G, A, T. As any biochemist can tell
you, using these four letters (and the MOD 4 function, of course)
we could decode from the decimals of p,
not only your own DNA sequence, and not only that of every species
of life that has ever existed or will ever exist on the planet
Earth, but of every DNA-based species that ever could exist
anywhere, anywhen, anyhow.
That
is the power of Infinity.
Perhaps
the reason the poor protagonist in that DVD went insane trying
to figure out the 'Secret Code' was that he couldn't think-outside-the-box
as we have just done. For, given what we have discussed above,
we know there actually is a very great truth waiting to
be discovered in the decimals of p.
That is this: Every 'thing' in all reality may be likened to an
irrational number. (A statement which I'm sure is making old Pythagoras
turn in his tomb.) Let's say, for example, that my soul (Simon,
the Pi-man?) is represented
by the number p (as
opposed to e, or 3Ö2, or
whatever). In the infinite expansion of decimals then, we have
determined above that we can decode my DNA sequence, my life story,
and a record of every thought I could ever imagine. This is pretty
freakin' amazing in itself, but if we think-outside-the-box once
again, it is possible to discover an even deeper truth. That is
this: All reality is simply a matter of a free-will choice of
perspective (i.e. which strategy you choose to decode digits)
on the infinite potential of being (i.e.
the irrational number representing your Soul, in my example, p).
Reality
as we know it then, is the interference pattern formed by the
bisociation of Perspective (Yang) and Potential (Yin).
Stepping
out of the box for a third and final time, we can finally realize
"The Meaning of Life".
As
stated and portrayed so eloquently in Tom Robbins book, Another
Roadside Attraction:
"In
life, there is nothing to win or lose, the only thing that matters
is style."
Hmmm....
With
this in mind, I would like to offer an invitation to join in on
something new I am starting.
It
is called:

This is a philosophical discussion group with a twist:
All
postings must be in some form of verse: be it poetry, a song,
an equation, whatever.
As stated in the 'About' section of the site...
Our
aim at this site, is to sing out a song
Upon high to the One, the Creator of
All
Resounding the Truths, we've learned
since our Fall
So that it is seen, how we're righting
our wrong.
Our thoughts are voiced with rhythm
and rhyme
Never speaking of riches or things unkind.
Great deeds we achieve as we focus our
mind
On dreams and reality, on energy and
time.
For each one of us carries, buried in
our soul
Some piece of the Truth - God's First
Matter.
Once we fuse each iota, as a prayer
of sweet attar
New bliss will be ours, dissolved in
the whole.
Good greetings we send, to all who'd
join in
Singing thoughts and ideas that you
find within. |

It is my belief
that we are to create something of immense value to humanity.
So please...
submit your
small slice of samadhi.
Sincerely,
Simon
P.S.
The immense
implications for immortality involved in this idea are immediately
evident, except they are external to the examination I have elected
to exhibit. Moreover, to the Mensa minded minutia of Mother Earth,
I maintain that any mathematical mistakes in my meditation you
might want to mention were missed due to my mediocre abilities
in managing manuscripts, and nothing more. An admission to the
absolute attestability of the approximations, all ought allow.
