The Philosopher's Riddle

Simon Christopher

A quick search of the term '*gry' at the following sites will turn up some interesting information.

Merriam-Webser Dictionary

Brittanica Encyclopedia
(search already entered)

Mainly, that THERE IS NO SUCH WORD!

If you count the occurences of the capitalized ONE's in the riddle you would find that there are four. Now if you fill 'for' into the blank you get the word 'forgry' which is a poor spelling of the word forgery.

In fact, in a sense it IS a forgery.

Anything you fill in the blank will be a forgery, as there is no other word ending in '*gry' in the English language. Therefore, to answer the riddle correctly, all you have to do is ANSWER.

And simply due to the fact that you tried, you deserve my utmost repect.

(Special thanks to Linda Gray who brought this riddle to my attention)
