June 23,
2000 My fellow
workers, The district
has requested that I assist in an ongoing organizing drive at a non-union
facility along the Pennsylvania-Maryland border. I must say I have some
reservations about being away, and I know the Company is not happy with the
idea, but after conferring with Jim Asher and Sharon Miller it was agreed that
if I turned this down I likely not be asked again. We also agreed that this
was an excellent opportunity, not only for myself, but for our Unit as well.
I’ll have the chance to gain some front-line
experience in a key aspect of Unionism, and do a little “networking”, as
our friends in the Company would term it. I’ll meet different people within
our Union and get our Unit a little exposure. Believe me, from the little bit
of experience I have at these functions I’ve come to realize that we do a
pretty decent job around here, and other folks are interested in hearing what
we’re up to. I also know that there are always new and different ideas which
we haven’t thought of or tried yet. As things
stand now, it looks as if I’ll be out of the plant through the end of this
month, I’ll return for two days before July 4th, and will again
be out until shutdown. As I said, I’m a little hesitant about being away but
Know our Union is in good hands. I plan to call in frequently and stop by
whenever possible, most likely on the off shifts. In
solidarity,
