July 3, 2000 My fellow
workers, As you’re
all probably aware, I was out of the plant last week to assist a USWA
organizing campaign. The campaign is taking place at Grove Worldwide, a crane
& man-lift manufacturer with approximately 1,700 employees in three plants
in Franklin county, Pennsylvania. Franklin county lies along the along the
Pennsylvania-Maryland border, just north of Hagerstown. The request for help
came up rather suddenly. I know the Company wasn’t too pleased, and I’ll
admit that I too originally had some reservations about being away. But after
conferring with Jim Asher and Sharon Miller it was agreed that if I turned
this down I’d likely not be asked again. We also agreed that this was an
excellent opportunity, not only for myself, but for our Unit as well. I’m
gaining some front-line experience
in a key aspect of Unionism, and getting to do a little “networking”, as
our friends in the Company would term it. There are about 45 Steelworkers from
all over the US working on this drive. When we aren’t working we spend a lot
of time talking about what’s going on at our respective Local’s. I’ve
meet a lot of people and made quite a few friends. I’ve also done a good
deal of talking about our Union here at Nice. I’m very proud of all of you
and I think it shows. As things now
stand, I’ll be back at Grove from July 5th right up to our
shutdown. I do, however, plan to be in our plant for a few hours after my
shift this morning and again for my regular shift tonight. I’ll also be back
for Cho’s retirement later in the month. So if you need to talk you can
catch me then. Otherwise see Jim or Sharon. You can talk with them or ask for
my number at the hotel. I’m usually in my room until 8 am and back some time
between 9:30 & 10 pm. And speaking
of retirements, I’m glad I made it back for Paul’s. I honestly hated to
leave after that luncheon. The food was great and it felt good to be home. I
couldn’t think of a better way to show our appreciation for Paul and the
twenty years of service he’s given us at Nice. Everyone who helped with it
deserves a big thank-you! In
solidarity,
