August 7, 2000 My fellow
workers, First and
foremost, I’d like to thank all of you for your good wishes during my recent
hospital stay. The beautiful fruit basket from everyone at NICE really helped
speed my recovery. I feel much better than I have in a long time and am glad
to be back in our plant. I know that
last week’s lay-off is on everyone’s mind. It doesn’t make any more
sense to me than it does to you. We have many problems in our plant, but
getting rid of people hardly seems to be the solution. A lay-off won’t help
solve our troubles with machinery, production or the work groups. On the
surface this seems to be yet another directive from Connecticut - a decision
by someone hundreds of miles away, looking to make a quick buck, with no
commitment to either the people in this plant or the work group system
negotiated by management. Now that I’ve returned our Union will sit down
with the Company to see if we can’t get a clearer understanding of what’s
going on. I’ll keep you posted, but please remember, it’s at times like
these that our Union needs your support. We’ll have no say if we don’t
stand together. In solidarity,
