August 10, 2001 My
fellow workers, By
now, no doubt, you are all aware of the unfortunate incident that took place
yesterday morning in our Union office. As
your president it is my responsibility to lead by example, but if my recent
actions are any indication, I’m not doing that very well. I owe each and every
member of our Union an apology. No disagreement should be permitted to
deteriorate to the point of physical violence, yet that’s just what I allowed
to happen. I may offer any number of excuses, but none of them is acceptable. To
say that I am deeply embarrassed by what has occurred is a gross understatement.
I am truly sorry for my part in all of this. At the same time, I would like to
thank those of you who, witness to what went on, had both the good sense to
realize something was wrong and concern enough to intervene before things got
worse. I don’t even want to think about how this might have ended if not for
your actions. Again, I am grateful. Right
now I believe the best thing for us, as individuals and as a Union, is to put
this episode behind us and move forward, taking from it one simple lesson: by
struggling against one another rather than working together, we will can only do
ourselves more harm than good. In solidarity,
