May 6, 2002 My fellow workers, An
injury to one is an injury to all. This
simple statement is one of the most basic precepts of unionism, but it is
meaningless unless we, as union members, recognize its importance and act upon
it. On behalf of our entire union leadership I’d like to express our
gratitude to everyone who supported Jim Asher in his recent grievance.
Your spontaneous decision to stop working overtime at the end of last
month made a very strong statement, as did your support of our decision not to
participate in the Company’s 100th anniversary luncheon.
A decision, I might add, that was made at the suggestion of one of our
members. While
what happened to Jimmy was wrong - a truth born out by the fact that he has
been reinstated - the settlement we reached on Friday was fair and equitable. As a result I can honestly say that we, as a Union, have no
desire to “make them pay,” just as we trust the Company feels no need to
“get back at” Jim or anyone else. What
is needed now is for all of us, Union and Company alike, to work together to
put this grievance behind us and keep production moving forward. Perhaps
the most heartening thing to come out of this whole affair was our realization
of the importance of that simple statement above and the reassuring knowledge
that, when necessary, we can and will stand together.
Having said that, I want each of you to remember that Jim Asher
returned to work today thanks in no small part to your efforts on his behalf. In solidarity,
