Meeting Minutes:  1/25/07 7:00pm

Parent Allergy Support Group Meeting

“What Utah public schools offer in the safety of our children & their food allergies.”

Attendees:  Julie Alverson, Margaret Brae, Becky Coates, Cara Jones, Kelley Lindburg, Becky Parry, Marni Puzey, Ronda Rose

Introduction of Utah PTA Vice President Ronda Rose.

She is in great support of the House Bill 56 “Emergency Administration of Epinephrine”   The bill has passed in the House and sent to the Senate.  The bill allows any child care giver to obtain a prescription for an epi-pen, carry and administer it as needed as long as they have training through the Utah Health Department.  This bill also allows severe allergic children to carry an epi-pen in school and any willing person can administer in case of an emergency.  Ronda said that she is sure this bill will pass.  It passed in the House unanimously.

Ronda Rose discusses with us ways for us to help keep our children safe in public and charter schools.

  1. Make sure teachers and administrators are educated and know the severity of your child’s allergy.
  2. You need a 504.
    1. The 504 will not give legalities but will give accommodations and make administrators/teacher accountable.
    2. A 504 is a form/plan for children with medical limitations not mental limitations.  IEP is for mental limitations.
    3. The 504 will carry with your child from school to school and district to district.
    4. See www.utahparentcenter.org for help in filling out and making sure your 504 is being followed.
  3. You need a diet prescription.  A simple form stating your child’s food allergy or allergies and accommodations needed.  Take form to allergist to fill out and sign for authenticity.   If your school does not have a form Email Julie Alverson or Ronda Rose for a Jordan or Tooele district copy.  You can take the copy to your school and they will most likely honor it.
  4. Establish good relationships with teachers, cafeteria workers and administrators.  If they will not accommodate then simply leave, do not get angry.
    1. The steps to take if your child’s needs are not being met.  Start at the bottom then if they will not listen go to the next person up.

                                                               i.      Teacher 1st

                                                             ii.      Principle 2nd

                                                            iii.      Superintendent 3rd

                                                           iv.      School board 4th

    1. Re-enforce positive things that are happening to help them continue.

If you have any questions or just need help with keeping your child safe in his/her school and not having any luck email Ronda Rose @ rosegarden5@earthlink.net.  She is willing to come and support you.

 Discussion after Ronda Rose

Some Immunizations can have a nut chemical and they can be done without that chemical.  Some research may have to be done to figure out the name of the chemical.

You can get a picture allergy form from Davis District website under public relations.

www.gfutah.org has a restaurant list that serves gluten free foods.  These restaurants may also be accommodating to other food allergies.

www.amazon.com is a great place to shop for allergen free foods.  Anything over $25.00 shipping is free.

www.911med411.com has great medical bracelets that don’t fade or scratch.

www.vermontnutfree.com has nut free candy corn.

It was great to have so many members attend, get to know each other and help calm our fears.
