ASA Minutes for September 4, 2003
Welcome to ASA by President, Alicia Amuneke
Guests: Dr. Falola, Dr. Alayo, and Dr. Agwuele
Dr. Falola spoke about:
1. Yoruba class: A. We need more enrollments; B. it will satisfy the foreign language requirement; C. after taking Yoruba for 2 years you can test out to get credit for 4 years of the language
2. Academics: Since ASA is also known for its academics, it’s important for us to attend his academic lectures. (He’ll be having one on September 18th at 7pm at Jester 121A. We will be walking over there as a group after the meeting.)
3. Banquet: Possibly having a joint banquet with him this year.
Dr. Agwuele spoke about the class he’s teaching this semester: “Politics of Language in Africa.” The goal of the class is to help others to understand African language and its political implications. The class is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3:00 P.M.

Announcements:
DUES: $15/semester or $20/year; Dues need to be paid by Thursday, September 25, 2003!
Incentives for paying dues: 1. To enter the Raffle for UT paraphernalia
(winner will be notified at Fest Africa); 2. To become an ACTIVE MEMBER; 3. Voting and running in elections; 4. Access to the Test Bank; 5. To have food AT EVERY MEETING
T-Shirt: ASA will have a t-shirt this year; we (the officers) are currently
accepting ideas on t-shirt designs. The winner will receive a free t-shirt.
ASA’s first social will be on Friday, September 12th at the Union Underground Bowling Alley at 7pm. It will cost $3 to attend which will include food, shoes, and drinks.
We will pub for our general meetings on Tuesdays and Wednesdays between the hours of 10-1 P.M. Contact Erika at 440-0756 for any questions regarding pubbing.
Pick-a-prof: ASA should try to sign onto pick-a-prof as a group to obtain a discounted price of admission.
Campus Fusion: October 4, 2003 at Bass Concert Hall and the Plaza Area (North of Texas Memorial Stadium)
Party on the Plaza: Wednesday, September 10, 2003 from 11a.m.-5p.m.
The Nigerian Student Organization at the University of Houston is having their first banquet Oct. 3-5
Africa Public Lecture: “The Most Visible Black Man: The Example, the Story, and the Truth” Presented by Dr. Bernth Lindfors on Sept. 18th at 7:00 P.M. in JES 121A
