  • Upcoming Fundraiser:  Men’s basketball game on Nov. 29th
  • Kappa’s Carnival:  ASA will have a booth
  • Thanks-thru Giving Drive (with Delta Sigma Theta):  we are doing this to send baskets to local families; envelopes will be passed out next Thursday
  • Dance Team Fashion Show and Poetry will meet at the Jester West Smoothie Place at 3 P.M.
  • Ladies Night will be tonight at Alicia Amuneke’s apartment
  • Be a ‘Big Brother or Sister’ – contact Ayo for more details.
  • Wancha needs a bold/daring guy or girl to play as a character for a 3 min. movie.
  • Culture Break:  There was an open discussion on the African Woman’s view of African Men.  Topics such as polygamy, aggressiveness, patriarchy and self-identity (as far as claiming where one is from) were discussed regarding the men and stereotypes of African women were discussed as well.

I.  Welcome

 

II.  Icebreaker:  Everyone lined up according to his or her last name without talking during the process.

(Throughout the meeting note cards were passed around in which everyone wrote a potential question for the African Trivia booth that ASA will have set up at the Kappa’s Carnival on Friday.)

 

III.  Announcements:

      1.  Baylor: 

                  Everyone discussed/reflected on the Baylor trip.  Despite the ambiguity

during the awards ceremony, most of the members still enjoyed the

banquet.  Much props were given to the Dance Team and the Fashion

Show.

            2.  Banquet:

                        Next semester ASA will be having our banquet with Texas State (formerly

known as SWT.  More details on the banquet will be coming soon!!!

            3.  Fundraising:

                        ASA needs volunteers to participate as an extra in the movie “Cheer Up!”

which will be filmed here in Austin.  We needed 30 members to sign up by Friday(Nov. 7th ) at noon and 40 by Monday, Nov. 24th.  The only time ASA can do it as a group is on Monday, but for those not able to go on Monday, you may go on Sat. or Sun.  The pay is $10/person/hour and the time is from 7:15-5:00 P.M.  You may contact Nenna Egboh for more info.

            4.  Social:

                        ASA will be going to see the Matrix on Friday, Nov. 7th as a group.  We

will be going at 7:00 P.M., so everyone will meet at Jester at 6:00 P.M. to travel to Tinseltown together.  ASA will not be paying for this, so BYOM!

            5.  Mixer:

                        There will be a Pre-Pharmacy mixer for those interested in applying to

Pharmacy school.  Contact Yewande for more info.

 

            6.  Thanks-thru-Giving:

                        ASA is co-sponsoring the Thanks-thru-Giving project with the Deltas this

year.  Envelopes have been passed out to collect $$$; the goal is $3,000.  Keep in mind that the purpose is to provide needy families on the East Side with a basket of food; when asking for donations, stress that anything given will help.  The envelopes are due on Nov. 21st.

 

            7.  Pubbing:

                        ASA is still pubbing for the general meetings.  We pub everyday except

Fridays from 10-2 P.M.  Contact Erika Cardosa for more info.

            8.  Support our African Businesses:

                        The World Beat Café (located on MLK and Guadalupe) needs business.  If

you haven’t been yet, you should definitely consider going - they have great food.

 

IV.  Culture Break:

            The topic of the culture break was on “African Time”.  There was an open

discussion on it’s relevance, definition and significance.
