C*UUYAN Business Resolution 2000-C Endorsement of Linked Identities Networking in Coalition (LINC) ConCentric 2000 Camp Mardella, Denton, MD C*UUYAN Business Resolution 2000-C (Sponsored by Steering Committee) Endorsement of Linked Identities Networking in Coalition (LINC) BACKGROUND: At the February Steering Committee meeting we discussed the need to increase awareness on Young Adult and Campus Ministry issues, especially because this presidential election will help determine the direction of Unitarian Universalism over the next decade. On May 9th, there was a meeting of over 20 young adults in Boston to brainstorm the issues confronting people involved in Young Adult and Campus Ministries. The concept of creating a coalition of groups that have historically been underrepresented and marginalized in the Unitarian Universalist Association was introduced. On May 10th, Rob Cavenaugh, Donna Disciullo, Barb Greve, Joey Lyons, Kent Matthies, Kevin McCulloch, Alison Miller, Christine Murphy, and Justice Waidner met to further discuss the details of such a coalition, as well as the possibility of working together at the 2000 General Assembly. The organizations to be involved in the coalition are C*UUYAN (The Continental Unitarian Universalist Young Adult Network), YRUU (Young Religious Unitarian Universalists), DRUUMM (Diverse and Revolutionary Unitarian Universalist Multicultural Ministries), Interweave (representing Bisexual, Gay, Lesbian and Transgender Concerns) and UUWF (Unitarian Universalist Women's Federation). The desire is to recognize that we all want the UUA to contribute resources to help us manage our growth and development and to begin to network and support one another's interests. The goal is to work together rather than compete for a limited number of resources. The coalition would be named LINC, an acronym for Linked Identities Networking in Coalition. The three presidential candidates, Diane Miller, Larry Peers and Bill Sinkford, were all invited by this new coalition, LINC, to a forum to be held at GA 2000 in Nashville, Tennessee. At GA representatives from all of the above mentioned groups, including Kevin McCulloch, Alison Miller, Austin Putman and Justice Waidner representing Young Adults, gathered before the forum to begin a dialogue. The representatives examined the power structure & dynamics of the UUA, and a set of questions relevant to C*UUYAN, YRUU, DRUUMM, Interweave and UUWF were generated to ask the presidential candidates. The LINC forum was held the next evening with over 100 people in attendance. The candidates were given LINC's questions in advance and time was given for their response. After, additional concerns were raised and addressed by other members of these groups present at the forum. RESOLUTION: Whereas, C*UUYAN (the Continental Unitarian Universalist Young Adult Network), YRUU (Young Religious Unitarian Universalists), DRUUMM (Diverse and Revolutionary Unitarian Universalist Multicultural Ministries), Interweave (representing Bisexual, Gay, Lesbian and Transgender Concerns) and UUWF (Unitarian Universalist Women's Federation) have historically been underrepresented in the Unitarian Universalist Association; and Whereas, forming a coalition will benefit these five organizations by strengthening our voice, increasing our understanding of one another and broadening our base of support; Therefore, be it resolved that C*UUYAN participate in coalition with YRUU, DRUUMM, Interweave and UUWF, thereby establishing LINC, Linked Identities Networking in Coalition. The members and representatives of C*UUYAN present at Concentric 2000 direct our Steering Committee to coordinate the participation of C*UUYAN in this endeavor and to raise Young Adult and Campus Ministry issues in the context of this new coalition. Furthermore, whereas we recognize that working in this type of coalition requires that we understand: a) the unique experience and contribution to UUism of each coalition member; b) the dynamics of oppression in relation to each coalition member's experience and contribution to UUism; and c) the ways in which oppressions are linked (i.e. through language, media images, history, economics, etc.); be it therefore also resolved that C*UUYAN provide programming on linked oppressions at continental conferences in order to facilitate our participation in LINC. |
