Congregational Summary
"The Unitarian Universalist Church of Valdosta is committed to building a community of acceptance and love, where all people may strive for intellectual, moral and spiritual enlightenment. We offer a place to celebrate life's passages and to join in social action on behalf of local and global communities." This is our mission statement and our membership is solidly behind it.
Our congregation was organized in 1965 and has been active the entire 37 years. At present we have 23 members. Many of our members have been a transient population, often associated with the military base or university. Our times of growth have been when we had part-time ministers, but none of them lived in Valdosta. We feel that a resident minister, even less than full-time, can participate in the community and increase membership. Thus, one major goal is growth in membership.
A real strength is our beautiful facility, only five years old. We are located in a wooded, natural area, which
is entered from a state highway and is adjacent to property of a middle school.
We have a sanctuary large enough to seat about 100 people. This area can also
become a social hall because it has moveable furniture, an adjoining kitchen and
a bathroom. Across the breezeway is a smaller building, which has two bathrooms
and five individual rooms. At present this building is used for religious
education classes, women's group meetings, nursery, and office space. Outside we
have a grassy recreation area and nature trails through the adjoining woods. We
planned our site with an active, growing congregation in mind.
The Unitarian Universalist Church of Valdosta is the primary liberal religious voice in the area. Members are involved with local social action issues. Also, we are a diverse congregation in religious thought and interests, and enjoy provocative sermons and discussion. We enjoy one another and social activities. We pay our annual UUA and Florida District dues. Talented members maintain our website at http://www.oocities.org/uuvaldosta/. Financially, over the years, members have been able to meet the identified budget needs and special projects. Growth consultants have told us that there is potential in our area for 3-4 times our number. In summary, we are a dynamic, active, motivated group looking for a minister who will lead us in recruiting new members and will sustain and nourish our individual spiritual lives.
