Come and go haunting with us at the church in-the-woods! A $3.00 donation will get you a trip through a haunted room, drinks, and a snack. Not to mention games, prizes, and dancing! All ages are welcome!

Please bring donations
of non-perishable
food items for LAMP!

Check out our WebSite!!

UU-Valdosta is now "on-line" with a website, thanks to the computer expertise of Earl Daniels, who, even though he has recently relocated to Macon, has been working on the website, improving the layout and adding several items, including a photo of the new church! We will make every effort to keep it current with the most recent newsletter, announcements, etc. Earl asks for any suggestions, ideas, photos, etc. They may be sent to him via e-mail (earl@technologist.com) or passed on through the newsletter editor, Carol Stiles. The website is located at the following address:

Women's Group - Now on Tuesday night!

New night! Women's Group meets the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. Bring a snack to share, if you wish. We are bringing poetry or other writing - short story, fiction, whatever strikes your fancy - to read and discuss with the group. So pick up that volume of your favorite (or least favorite?) author. Or bring your own work to share!

November Board Meeting

On Sunday, November 16, a board meeting will be held after the church service, with potluck lunch (please bring a dish to share). As always, the board meetings are open to the public and all friends and members are encouraged to attend.

A Big Thank You..... to Ann Bachrach for recovering the pillows with new material before they were moved into the R.E. rooms last summer - making them all spiffy, new, and comfortable again!

Child Dedication

The child dedication for Courson Montgomery Elles will be held Nov. 2, 1997 at 1:00 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Valdosta. Courson is the son of Angie Montgomery and Joey Elles, and the grandson of Danny and Lucy Montgomery.

LAMP needs donations

Please bring non-perishable food items to the church and they will be delivered to the Lowndes Associated Ministries to the People program. Our normal month for this program is April, but additional donations are needed now!

Religious Education (R.E.) Classes

All R.E. classes meet at 9:30 a.m., Sundays, before the 10:45 a.m. service. The classes will be as follows:

Class 1 - primary elementary through 4th grade

Class 2 - 5th through 8th grade

Class 3 - Adult R.E.

The curriculum for Class 1 is We Believe, Learning and Living our UU Principles; for Class 2, we will use Travel in Time. During the church service, the students in Class 2 meet with an adult volunteer from the congregation. They have been planning the haunted house for the Halloween party, and will work on building a nature trail at the church this fall. (To volunteer to work with the students, contact Janet Andersen).

Adult R.E. is led by Hue Jacobs. The Adult R.E. class is reading and discussing The History of God, by Karen Armstrong.

What's Your Viewpoint?

A discussion was scheduled at the home of Steve and Janet Andersen, Sunday, October 26, to watch the videotape of the October 8 segment of "Public Eye with Bryant Gumbel." (Ed. note: The discussion was "stormed out," and will have to be rescheduled. ) The following is excerpted from the UUA website regarding this controversy:

"A Response to 'Public Eye With Bryant Gumbel':

On October 8, CBS television aired a segment centered on a controversy which developed in our Concord, MA congregation around the landmark sexuality curriculum, "About Your Sexuality" and the ways in which parents give permission for and are allowed to review materials used in the program.
.....
Although individuals from the UUA and the Concord church made clear to the show's producer and reporter the facts in this case and the reality of the thoroughness of the Concord church's willingness to address parental concerns, CBS decided to pursue the story, and to present it in a provocative and titillating way which was, we believe, designed to prejudice the opinion of the viewer.
.....
This piece of exploitative journalism has taken information and materials designed for an important sexuality education program which has successfully been used for more than twenty-five years -- to the benefit of thousands of youth -- and used them completely out of context. The UUA stands by its commitment to teach comprehensive sexuality education, and views the church community as one of the best places for young people to deal with issues of sexuality with safety and candor. We are proud of our Association's record for promoting responsible sexuality education, and continue our work in that field with the development of "Our Whole Lives," a five-section lifespan education program on human sexuality which will be published in August, 1999."
