Ben Hur, The Musical
by Heather Good, Leesburg High School
From the first few seconds of "Ben Hur", the audience
knows this play to be a winner. As the curtain rises, music swells
from the orchestra pit as the orchestra beans it's own stunning
performance. When the lights come up, a real, live camel is ridden
across the stage. All of these events foreshadow a spectacular
performance.
The story begins when the main characters,
Judah, Messah, and Esther, are children. Judah and Messala are
best friends and Judah and Esther are already in love. Time passes
quiddy and ten years later, a pot falls from the ledge of the
house of Hur almost killing a Roman centurion, and Judah is sent
off to the galleys by Messah who has become a Roman soldier. Messah
also sends Judah's mother and sister to prison Afew years later,
Judah is on board the slave ship, when pirates attack Judah survives
and rescues the centurion on board, who pardons and adopts him,
Back in Jerusalem, Judah and Esther meet again and when he cannot
find his mother and sister, Judah swears revenge on Messah for
the pains against his family. The opportunity for revenge comes
in the form of a chariot race in the Coliseum. Judah jumps at
the chance to race Messah and during the course of the race, Messah's
chariot is flipped, severely hurting and eventually crippling
him. Judah returns to Jerusalem to find that his mother and sister
have become lepers and have been living in a leper colony. He
seeks a cure, and a man, who has been helping the lepers, tells
of a man Christ, who can cure illness if given faith in God. Judah
takes his mother and sister to Jerusalem in time to see Jesus
crucified However, Judah believes and has faith, and his mother
and sister are cured On the day of Judah and Esther's wedding,
MeSsah shows up and is forgiven and welcomed into the celebration.
The actors were very on track and it seemed
as though you were actually in Jerusalem watching first hand the
sequence of events. Another aspect if the show that was very life-like,
was the sets. At one point in the show the is a complete half
of a slave ship on the stage. Fog and lights gave an idea of real
water. This scene was the best scene of the whole play, because
of the sets and the increduble singing. This singing started on
the very first scene and continued throughout the production,
helping to express the emotions of the characters a) the times
of the climatic events. This production was absolutely incredible!
I know that my friends and I left the performance speechless and
in awe. If you have a chance to see it in your area, go
Unfortunately, Ben Hur is no longer being produced in Orlando. The production at the Orlando Convention Center has not had enough business. The co~ spent so much money on making this a spectacular performance that they have gone bankrupt from lack of interest. This is a great tragedy as this was the best production I have ever witnessed. The company is suing the play and it's rights, for nine million dollars. If the~ is a buyer, they hope to have the production go on the road.
