The 2000/2001 State officers would like to welcome all delegates to the 2001 FJCL State Forum. Visit with the officers in Volusia from four thirty to five thirty before the opening assembly. We have made several new additions to the usual State Forum format by adding The Venus and Adonis Contest and the semi-formal dance on Saturday night. Those who have any interest in running for an office, please go to our How to Run a Successful Campaign seminar, on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. Feel free to talk to us through out the Forum, we are open to any suggestions and comments.

Hi, I am Michael James, a junior from St. Johns Country Day School. I have been on the St. Johns Latin Club for three years; I attended district forum, State forum, and National forum three times. I have served as Consul Secundus for my Latin Club twice, and I have served as District Pontifex Maximus. I want to hold a State office because I handle responsibility very well and I have a lot of experience. I want to serve as FJCL President because I feel that I can help to make the next State forum the best State forum ever.

Why do I wish to be the president of the FJCL? I have always been a JCL enthusiast. I first saw the FJCL as a forum for an academic competition, which I love and will continue to love. It was not till my first year at Nationals, FSU-1999, that I realized there were other platforms of the JCL that were fulfilling. Opportunities such as meeting new people, nation-wide travel, or even leisure could be more satisfying than academics! My intensity for the JCL grew at Nationals, 0U-2000. It was here that I truly inherited to JCL spirit. I know I have acquired leadership abilities all throughout my life whether it is through student government or holding office in my JCL chapter. I wish to be FJCL's next president simply to put my spirit, hard work, and determination toward an organization that I truly care about.

Dear Fellow F JCL Members,
I have gone to the State and regional Forums for the past five years. I think I'm the biggest fan in my school of this marvelous event. Now even though my school isn't that big, I know that I have encouraged those younger students to go to the Forum and compete. For the past five years I have done Declamations and I have participated in my school's Certamen team for the past three years. To ask if I am qualified for the office of Vice-President is a bit redundant. I have the President of my class for two years in a row so I have plenty of experience in the field of managing. I have taken six years of Latin and Greek, and I believe that thanks to those courses I have been able to appreciate the Greco-Roman culture of ancient times. But I don't want to keep on going on how I'm qualified. I want to also assure that I will come up with great new ideas on how to make the already great FJCL, into a better one. I also believe in having fun, which is my philosophy. "Study but know when to have a great time". If anyone has any questions about anything I'd be sure to assist them. So I'm asking you a very important part of this Classical membership to realize that my words are potential actions. I know that you will make the right decision and I hope that I will be included in that choice.
With Great Thanks, William Sanchez

Dear Florida Junior Classical League,
Salvete or KAIpETE! As Praetor elect of my District Forum,
I wish to run for state Vice-President and take on more responsibility
for the JCL and for carrying the torch of Classics. I am passionately
in love with the Classics and firmly dedicated to their preservation
and advancement.
I know how to work with people, something I am learning
as Editor-in-Chief of my high school newspaper. I am going to
make Classical Philology my Ph.D. and career. Latin is no longer
a course, it is a personal endeavor, and teaching myself Homeric
Greek is a challenging but rewarding experience. If you elect
me I will work hard to do whatever I can to help keep the JCL
alive and flourishing! Calvo turpius est nihil comato!

For me, JCL has become such an influential part of my life
that I don't think
I could find a better way to inspire the same feeling in others
but by running
for the office of Vice President. I saw the officers work hard
and give it
their all at Nationals this summer and State last year, and I
feel like I
could encourage more of this awesome dedication to the state from
its
members. I've played an active role in leadership positions in
and out of
JCL, so I know the dedication, conscientiousness, enthusiasm,
and hard work
it takes to be the best officer I can be. I've got tons of ideas
for themes,
cheers and other spirit promoters. If I don't find you first,
please come and
say hi! I'd love to share them with you.

To ask why I want to be an F JCL officer is to ask why I take Latin - although both questions seem logical when asked, everyone who has ever been to a Latin Convention knows the answer. You can't help but love Latin, and the Conventions are a chance to spend time and compete with others who appreciate what many consider "a dead language." I have enjoyed serving as F JCL Parliamentarian more than I can convey in only 150 words, and I have enjoyed the three state conventions I have attended as well as the two national conventions. I am looking forward to New Orleans this summer, and I hope I can be leading the cheers as F JCL Vice President. I have a lot of ideas for spirit, and I know Florida is ready to show everyone at Nationals how proud we are of our JCL.

Statement for desire to run for elected office
Why I feel I would make a good Parliamentarian.
Within my life, order is very important. Maintaining order and following the precepts of the law has great meaning to me. I've been to the Regional and State Fora for the past three years and attended the National forum in 1998-1999. I am the editor of the Leesburg High School Stinger and I have just recently been accepted to represent my district at the Boy's State Program. If I were to be elected as FJCL Parliamentarian, I would apply my experience and these same principles to the workings of our meetings in an effort to better this organization for everyone. FJCL must be made into an efficient yet enjoyable experience for everyone involved, and if I were elected Parliamentarian, that would be my number one goal.

"Why I wish to serve as an FJCL Officer"
Being a member of FJCL for the past two years has been an excellent experience for me. Between State and National fora I've met people from all around the state and country, and the spirit and the comradery within Florida's Junior Classical League never ceases to amaze me. I often wondered just what I could do to repay the FJCL for the great times I've had. This past national forum I watched from the sidelines as the current FJCL officers worked together to bring that spirit to life, and to tell the nation "We are from Florida!". I realized then what I could give back to FJCL: direct participation, as the State Parliamentarian. The office of Parliamentarian fits me the best by far, and I feel confident I can use this position to increase the already overflowing spirit of the state. Vote Phil for 2001-2002 Parliamentarian!

Having attended both State Forum and National convention for the past two years, the spirit of FJCL has built up inside of me, and I am ready to share the spirit with my fellow JCLers. I want to do what I can to make the JCL experience enjoyable for all that participate. I have served two offices in my school's Latin club, but I am ready to take the next step and be a leader at the state level. JCL is about making new friends who share a common interest with you and having a good time with them. Being an FJCL officer would give me the opportunity to ensure that everyone gets as much out of the JCL as I do.

I would like to be FJCL Recording Secretary for the 2001-2002
year. In all my clubs I like being involved. Being a FJCL officer
would give me a leadership experience that would serve me well
the rest of my life in all that I do. Planning organizing are
my hobbies and gifts. Also, I love meeting new people. I think
it would be interesting and fun to meet kids from other JCL and
Latin Clubs around the state. I like Latin and want to stay involved.
I might even major in Classics so I could become a high school
Latin teacher one day.
