Contact North is a Government of
Ontario program that uses technology to deliver educational and training opportunities at
the secondary and post-secondary levels from publicly funded educational institutions to
residents of northern Ontario. Technologies supported by Contact North are audio
teleconferencing, audiographics (Optel), computer mediated conferencing and
videoconferencing. Contact North is in the midst of a ten month project VUSATT
(videoconferencing using satellite and terrestrial technology. We have demonstrated the
convergence of switched 56 with satellite sites and have integrated the optel system. The
project ends June 30,1995 and a final report will be published.

We use a microwave backbone in
combination with ATM/SONET North Carolina Information Highway (NCIH) connections. All
NC-REN sites can do dial-up conferencing via the CLI codecs located at the Network
Operations Center at MCNC. There are over 65 other NCIH sites across the state that we can
connect with (including community colleges, hospitals, high schools). MCNC is also the hub
of the HPCC Video Collaboratory which includes Cornell Theory Center, Pittsburgh
Supercomputing Center, National Science Foundation, San Diego Super Computing Center and
the National Center for Supcomputing Applications.
