EXT. THE ROOFTOP - Night
DANA and NICK are sitting outside on the roof of his apartment. Nick has his legs dangled over the edge. In his lap is Dana's head. She is looking into the night, ponderous. Nick is stroking her hair gently. He, too, is looking out into the night.
NICK
(almost in a whisper)
...My precious girl...
He traces her fingers down the side of her face and along her jaw line.
NICK
...who feels as though the world has cast her out, rejected you
and forced
you to sit in the corner of life. You've given up ever being
happy, forgetting
those ridiculous fantasies you had when you were a teenager - of
a husband,
two kids, a dog.
Dana looks away, as if knowing he can see into her very existance when he gazes into her eyes. Nick tilts her head gently.
NICK
What if I could give you someplace to belong?
DANA
(softly)
I wouldn't fit in there either. I'd be an outcast among outcasts.
Nick pauses for a moment, as if to ponder.
DANA
I don't think I should be taking my chances.
NICK
But when have you taken a chance?
DANA
I don't know if I really want to.
There's a brief pause.
NICK
I respect that.
Another brief pause.
DANA
Nick?
NICK
Yes?
DANA
Have you ever regretted your decision?
Wished you could turn back time and undo it all?
NICK
What do you mean?
Dana raises her head from his lap and leans against his shoulder, still staring into the night.
DANA
I don't know...this whole vampire thing.
Have you ever thought to yourself that you should have
just stuck it out and lived your live to see what happened?
NICK
I never regretted it.
Pause
NICK
Not once.
Nick briefly looks to her, with a moment of possible regret. He touches her hair again and strokes it, watching his hand.
DANA
Have you ever loved?
NICK
Of course.
DANA
What happened?
Nick looks to his side, almost pensive.
NICK
(not looking up)
What do you mean?
DANA
The outcome. What was it?
NICK
Why do you ask?
Dana yawns.
DANA
(Without emotion)
I can see her. She lies in your eyes. You always look for her
wherever you go...you look like someone who has loved and lost.
Heartbreaking, really. It always makes me wonder.
