1st Round vs Mark Bumula (Early Russian)
The Russians invaded and tried to find an empty plain to fight in. The Irish maneuvered them toward a hilly area with steep hills on the Russian right and Irish right center. The Anglo-Irish deployed with the CinC’s command on the left center, the Anglo-Irish Ally knights in the right center, and the Irish on the far right.
Facing them were, in my left to right, Mark’s Ally general (Cv Gen, rest Lh) (behind the CinC’s command, CinC (BwI, CvO, KnF), his sub-general (SpO,PsO,CvO). His subgeneral was in a 3 deep Sp backed with PsO facing directly across from my knights.
However his left flank was a bit open with a possible exploit for the Irish – if they could get there. It was a windy day, and fortunately for the Irish it was in the Russian’s faces.
We closed quickly across the front. My bowmen started well enough gunning down an enemy cav and auxilia. On my right, the knights and spears closed every closer together. And the Irish were moving, but the Russian light horse were flying across the back of the battlefield to get to the Russian left flank. By bound three I was in serious hurt.
The knights were crushed by the Russian spear, and quickly broke, leaving a serious hole in my center. But on my left, the CinC archers continued their barrage, gunning down another bowman, leaving Mark’s CinC only one away from breaking. On my left the Russian LH ally had arrived ensuring the Irish were NOT going to flank anyone. My light horse pulled back enough to be a threat, but not close enough to get run down.
I finally broke Mark’s CinC and kept his rushing spear charging after my baggage instead of my commands. But it was all for naught. A few out of place figures in chasing Mark finally collapsed my CinC’s command, giving Mark a 23-9 win.
Round 2 vs Rob Cunningham (Syro-Cannaite)
This time, I invaded. Rob placed a piece of rough on his back right and a small gentle hill in his center backline. I placed a rough hill center right. Rob’s army was basically lined up across the back of his deployment zone with large groups of BwI, CvS chariots, and some BdI. But with the wind in my face I moved forward at an angle, thinking Rob was going to come at me – big mistake.
My CinC was on the left center, the Anglo Ally on the left and the Irish behind the hill on the right flank. I moved forward, to hold his chariots in a Bd/Bw formation. But with the wind in my face I couldn’t gun anything down. Rob’s Ally general on the left when unreliable for all but the last killer bound (killer against me).
My knights went in on his BwI and died. And just as I was going to flank some AxI of his in the center with my LH, his ally came alive, cross cutting my LH with a badly flanked general behind. Of course he killed the LH and the general. And the command collapsed. With both flanks gone, I went in and promptly lost the additional elements to break my army. Rob basically just had to sit there and watch me nail myself on his arrows and spears – ugly 32-0 loss.
Round 3 vs John Stafford (Spring and Autumn Chinese)
I invaded again, placing a road on the left center, a steep hill in the center back, and right. John placed a woods in my left front and I can’t remember what else. His army consisted of loads of IBwI, BdO, and KnO chariots.
My army was deployed with the Irish on the far left, the Anglo Ally next to them just to the right of the woods. The CinC was placed from the knights to the far right hill, manned by some of my RBwI.
Well right off hand, both my Anglo Ally and his right flank commands went unreliable. That allowed the Irish, on my far left to clear the woods and outmaneuver some of his AxO to break that command. As that was going on, his command became active, and so did my knights. They strode toward each other ready to come to grips. But the battle was decided on the other flank.
Our CinC’s faced of with me trying to straighted out my deployment from around the hill in the center back. That gave John time to make a hole and bring his knight chariots through his bowmen. I angled the line, went two deep where I could and promptly got run over. With the CinC broke, the whole thing was over. 29-3 win for John.
Overall I like the option for the LH Irish. I may paint the rest and try it at 400 AP. Oh well – off to Cold Wars!!
