Tanis is the son of an Qualinesti woman who was raped by a human mercenary during the trouble times just after the Cataclysm. He was raised in the house of the Qualinesti's ruler, the Speaker of the Suns, and became betrothed to his daughter, Lauranathasia. He left Qualinost when his human blood cuased him to mature much faster than his elven peers. Out among the humans, he met and befriended the dwarf Flint Fireforge, and through Flint met the rest of what would become known as the Innfellows. During the several years of adventure and bladeslinging that followed, he fell in love with the human woman Kitiara oth-Mitar.

Tanis is the de facto leader of the Innfellows, and later the Heros of the Lance. Very aware that neither the humans nor the elves truly accept him, he wants nothing more than a place he can call home.
