| Page 2 of 3 The weather was cold but it was not windy, and the bulk of the recent snow had melted, so we decided that even 12 minutes was too long a time to be cooped up in a bus when we could take about an hour for a leisurely walk back across Lovö, and catch the bus from Drottningholm. The other stone we intended to see was in Bromma, only a 15 minute walk from home. We were still in the mood for a walk, so off we set. This walk was not quite as picturesque, through Bromma's residential area along a major road, a far cry from Lovö's quiet fresh country air. The instructions for finding the stone said it would be located on top of a hill, near a windmill opposite a lake. This windmill is well known to us - we see it every time we take the airport bus from Bromma to Stockholm Arlanda airport to fly back to Belgium! We went to the top of the hill, and had a good rummage around near the windmill - no stone. Charlotta went off and asked a couple living nearby if they knew where the stone was. Luckily they did - our instructions had been a little misleading to say the least. We were told that the stone was further back down the hill towards Bromma, and off the road a little, towards an industrial estate. Off we trekked again, and after about 5 minutes I was starting to get a little downhearted. We just seemed to be walking further into an industrial area, it was starting to become dark and still no stone! Then, all of a sudden, less than 50 metres ahead we spotted the familiar shape of an information point, it's white surface clearly standing out against the trees, and then as we walked a little further we finally saw the stone, silhouetted against the white backdrop of the snow covered bank on which it stood. In the fading light we climbed up to the stone. The cold was also closing in, and Alice, our daughter, was starting to get restless. We took a few photos, make some notes from the information point, and then headed home. |

| The stone's registration number is UR 56 GLIA, and it dates from sometime in the 11th century. It's inscription reads - "Gammal och Tjälve de läto resa denna sten (efter...) sin fader en dungande man Gud hjälpe hans själ", which translates to "Gammal and Tjälve raised this stone to (name) their father a (can't translate!) man God help his soul." | |
