Ein Gedi oasis. A tropical sanctuary hidden in the hills near the Dead Sea. Crystal clear pools fed by cool waterfalls and shaded by large green ferns give home to many plants and animals in the otherwise dry, hot, inhospitable desert surrounding the Dead Sea. But for us, it was just a beautiful spot to cool off and escape the hot afternoon sun. I think I saw the lead singer of Radiohead lounging near a waterfall in one of the pools too! Weird.
A sidenote: We camped on the beach of the Dead Sea the night before going to Ein Gedi, in what had to be +35 degree heat, therefore we didn't set up our tent. Then after dark, we noticed (and felt) several small, dark things crawling around and over us. I turned my headlamp on to discover that the beach was covered in cockroaches in the middle of the night! We quickly set up the tent and spent a very hot, sweaty and sleepless night inside the safety of its thin nylon walls as the cockroaches scurried everywhere outside. Bizarre. |
