Few tips for good maintenance of a computer
___________________________________________
Here are few tips to maintain a computer. I have tried to divide them as
*concerning HARDWARE
*concerning SOFTWARE
________________
Hardware Part
----------------
1. Always keep the computer in an open and well lit place.
2. Keep it atleast 10 inches away from the nearest wall.
3. Group all the wires at the back and tie them together according to the connections
ex: tie all the cables to the UPS together so you can keep it tidy.
4. Regularly dust the cabinet with a soft cloth.
5. Check to see that the wires inside the cabinet do not hinder the flow of air
into and from the cabinet.
6. Never use organic solvents to clean any part except the monitor.
7. Avoid restarting the computer using reset button on the cabinet.
8. Keep Floppy and CD's in a clean place.
9. Don't use floppy with bent tab. Don't pull the tab frequently as this may
damage the spring action.
10.Always eject and close the CD tray with the botton on the drive.
Never push the tray as this may damage the alignment.
_______________
Software part
---------------
1. Never switch off the computer till you shutdown from the software.
2. Regularly defragment your hard disk. This will considerably increase the performance
goto: Start>Programs>accessories>System tools>Disk defragmenter in windows.
3. Use a good antivirus software and regularly update the virus definitions.
4. Check updates for the drivers from the manufacturer's website.
5. Regularly scan your computer for viruses.
6. Download softwares only from trusted sites.
7. Empty the contents of 'temporary internet files' folder.
to do this,in IE goto:tools>internet options>deletefiles & clear history.
8. Avoid high resolution Wall papers as this takes some time at startup.
9. Avoid using themes and sound schemes.
10.Reduce the number of unneccesary programs in your startup folder.
alternatively you can change this by
goto: start>run>msconfig. here goto startup.ini
and uncheck the programs you do not want to load on startup.
11.From BIOS change to 'First boot device' to hard disk as some time gets wasted seeking
for a startup disk otherwise.
12.Create a startupdisk for your OS. In windows98,
goto:start>settings>control panel>addremove programs>startup disk
Hope this will boost the performance of your computer..
