How not WHY I did stuff...
Successfully booked on-line, bought x, registered with n,  etc.,  with <Non-IE browser> when site wanted Internet Explorer.

Some sites will only work fully if they think that you are using Internet Explorer.

Sometimes this may be useful, for instance if you are using a VERY old or unusually obscure and insecure browser. Usually there is no technical reason for this other than a user agent header issue.

Many of these sites will work ok with firefox with this plugin.

If you are a mac user using safari this should help.

1. Quit Safari.
2. Open the Terminal and type (or copy and paste) this line:

defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDebugMenu 1

3. Restart Safari. There is now a Debug menu item in the menu bar.
4. Click Debug and scroll down to User Agent. Select Windows MSIE 6.0.
5. Make yer booking or whatever.

Thanks for help with mac solution to HERE

If you have encountered a site with this problem maybe you could do them a favour and e-mail their webmaster and let them know - they may be unaware of this problem as some on-line payment service providers for example still have this issue which may cause their clients to loose customers for no reason. Banks and so-forth are changing but a few organisations have been a bit slow on the uptake. Capital One is a recent one to change after much complaining by customers.

Another great tool for controlling your browsing experience, whatever browser you use, is Privoxy. A very configurable HTTP proxy.
