THE JOY OF HAVING JOY

Joy Mortel Fabilla came home from Hong Kong several weeks ago and we had a 
small get together at the new condo building along Abad Santos Avenue,
Tondo, Manila owned by the Conejos Family.  It was held last June 14,
Friday which conicided with the building inauguration and blessing
officiated by yours truly.

 It was gracious and Mecedes Conejos tender the dinner in honor of Joy,
one of the Cancer babes who exhudes simplicity and inner peace up to now.
To think that Mercedes just hosted the planning session held overnight in
their family resort in Majayjay last May.  The once shy and anassuming
Mercedes who evaded every batch mini-reunion has transformed into a
gracious hostess of various gatherings for the group.

 The Cancer regulars were present to cheer up Joy who last saw them some 24
years ago.  Kisses and hugs here and there.  Present was Joy's high school
sweetheart ('though platonic) Ronnie Nieva whose father was Joy's "ninong
sa kasal."  Others present were: myself (whom Joy and husband Joel tendered
a pecking duck dinner when I was in Hong Kong in April after the Holy
Week),  Leonor Rivera-Piguing, Romana Reyes, Ellen Directo-Fabie, Malou
Cruz-Santos, Dr. Ching Cabildo-Albornoz with her divine chinese red wine
bottles, Rey Medenilla and the some non-Cancer friends of Joy namely, Olive
Griarte-Seña, Edna Adriano-gilera and Evelyn Alcaraz-Muallil who brought
her famous home-made chocolates.

 The bountiful table overflowed with meat viands with sauce and sumptuous
seafood fares -  alimangong matataba, etc.  Even the desserts were heavenly!

 More than the food, it was delicious to see Joy after a long time.  Being
one of her close friends, I readily recalled how Joy sweat it out during
college which she finished in seven years because she had to work on the
side as she was also the breadwinner.  I was happy to see her in Hong Kong
having a happy married life, a comfortable way of living, a good=paying job
and a private travel business on the side. 

 It indeed an unfathomable joy to see Joy fulfilled her dream of a siple
but comfortable life. When she left for Hong Kong, her husband Joel paid me
a visit in Tondo and told me that his wife called up saying that she wanted
to come home to the Philippines once more after three months.  I suppose
that Joy just caught the Batch '78 fever and wanted to see us more often.

not aware of KaEskwela Website. I know everybody in English 1 will be happy

MRS. DERES AND MS. NABONG (r.i.p)

Peace and every blessing!

I just came from Torres High to check on the records of Batch '78 so that I
could send letters to all.  The records officer advised that such step
would prove mostly useless basing from the past homecomings.  Most of the
people have changed addresses. Thus, it's better to make do with all media
blitz in order to call their attention.  We'll announce the registration of
batchmates on all t.v. channels;  radio stations;  churches in Tondo, etc.
I will also come up with an announcement at two major dailies (Philippine
Daily Inquirer and Philippine Star).

Anyway, it was a short but meaningful visit.  I chanced upon Ms. Raquel
Gulapa, Botany and Zoology teacher of the Special Science Classes.  It
seems that she's the only remaining one among the missing links.  I was
also told of the death of MRS. DERES, Introductory College Chemistry
teacher to the SS people. She was buried just last week after a bout with
cancer.  MS. NABONG, the head librarian during our time also died last
April 19. I am particularly sad because Mrs. Deres was like a mother to me. 

When we were in fourth year, I was always out to represent Torres High in
various writing and oratorical contests and congresses and conventions of
all kinds.  Thus, I missed a lot of recitations and quizes.  At the end of
the quarter, Mrs. Deres felt bad that she told me that I had nothing in her
records - exams, quizes, recitation, etc.  Understanding and loving mother
that she was, she ended up asking me what grade she would give me.  I gave
a figure, quite high and undeserved by me.  when the report cards were
handed out, lo and behold!  She gave me exactly what I told her!  How can I
forget her?

I even used to visit her in her place in Tugatog, Malabon.  I was also the
one who handed her the award for the Most Outstanding Science Teacher some
six years ago.   She also attended one of our Cancer reunions at Amy's
place. 

Ms. Nabong on the other hand was one of the prime movers of the First
Friday Masses in Torres High (together with the late Mrs. Fernandez).  I'm
sure Felix and the other SCAns would have a good recall of her. It was in
Torres where the First Friday mass was held.  Now every public school in
the entire metropolis has adopted the practice.  I also had very fond
memories of Ms.Nabong when as a young priest in Malabon, she would invite
me to say their monthly mass at the University Hills Chapel at UE Kalookan.
 While she remained a spinster, she never got tired of serving the Lord in
her own special way.

Eternal rest grant unto them oh Lord.  And let perpetual light shine on
them forever.
