I look up his name in the Canada 411 on the web and called the ones with G initial.  His number was changed from the listing because he just moved from Toronto to Scarborough last April.  And he is much closer to us in their new place.  I called him from the office but he is not home yet.  I got hold of him last night.  Man, it feels like I got hold of a family member that I have'nt talked to for a long time.  45 minutes yata kami nag-usap at balitaan sa mga past experiences.  He has been here in Canada for 2 years.  He works in the finacial district, downtown.  He has two kids 16 and 12 years old.  He worked as an accountant in cruise lines before.

Duroy talks like Riz....parang si Riz ang kausap ko....kambal ata kayo, Riz?  I'll be away this weekend on a camping trip but I will try to see him in person one of these nights.  Excited na akong makita si Duroy and meet his family and have him meet Chona and the kids, too.  Finally dalawa na kaming mathematicians sa Toronto area.

Leila Plopino Palomarez

At last we found one of the wanted list:  Leila Palomarez.  Fenchie has located her at Bulacan, Bulacan.  She married Gener Palomarez in 1985.  They are blessed with three beautiful children:  two sons and a daughter.  Their eldest is now a nursing student at Fatima College, while the youngest, fondly called Muymoy, goes to Grade 1.  Leila has long resigned from her brief stint of teaching.  She finished Mass Comm from PLM.  She has decided to stay in Bulacan and took care of her ailing parents who have now both passed away.  She has a small business of her own making lyaneras for leche flan and baking pans.  If you want to find her, just go to the markets in Bulacan and ask for “Leilang Maglalyanera” and they can surely point you to her place.
She is an active member of the Iglesia ni Cristo and is a choir member.  She lives a very simple, religious and contended life.  She is sure to be the life of the party every time she is present in any occasion.  Si Leila, ang babaeing bakla.  If you talk to her, you’ll know why.  Hmmm… Charing ka diyan!?!

Myrna Canlas Dayrit

Nagpakita rin ang Myrna Canlas Dayrit at last.  She came with Olive Griarte to visit Fenchie last July.  Myrna is the eldest of SIXTEEN brood.  She helped her parents take care of her younger siblings which made her delay her tying the knots.  She got married in her 30’s and has now a young son and a young daughter.  A devoted mom, she gladly gave up her accounting job in Makati to be a full time mom to her little ones.  Her husband works abroad.  Her family resides in Valenzuela, Bulacan.

Myrna is the right person to talk to everytime you are down.  She is the queen of positive thinking.  A week before our high school graduation, our whole class, E-1, was so worried about her as we learned that their house got burned  and the family has lost all their belongings.  Pagdating nang graduation, ang Myrna pa ang dumating with her famous super big smile  in spite of her most recent ordeal then, wearing borrowed white dress and pair of shoes.  Siya na yata ang taong hindi kailan man panghihinaan ng mga problema sa buhay.  She once said:  “Tignan mo ang kapaligiran mo, bilangin mo ang mga daliri mo, kung kumpleto ito, napakarami kang dapat ipagpasalamat sa buhay mo.”
 
 

Everybody missed Joseph Gelito alias Josephine Bracken of IV-E1 especially during the Fenchie’s welcome party  at the Pangan’s residence last June.  Who would ever think that suddenly, Ruben and Fenchie were able to locate her through Ruben’s sister, Tina.  Tina is working as a receptionist in Los Angeles, USA, when she met Joseph who was giving a ride to one of the workers there.  (Incidentally, Tina and Joseph became close friends  at FEU during college days.) 
Joseph has worked as entertainment director at a cruise liner traveling Philippines- Singapore.  After working for 3 years, the ship sank at may I “Titanic” ang Josefa.  Ang malaking problema, yung green card niya, nilamon ng mga tilapia sa dagat.  Kaya’t napilitan ang babae na umuwi ng  L.A. sa kanyang mga parenthood para ma-resyuhan ng green card.  Napatagal ang process kaya’t nag-decide ang mujer na mag-stay muna at mag-work sa L.A.  He works as entertainment coordinator for an old folks home and on the side still do comedy shows.  He will travel to San Francisco and possible New York to do shows.  So mga ka-batch dito, wait for Joseph’s show.  He has agreed to even do a show for our reunion next year. 

Cresita Esteva

        We have been through the British Isles, the islands of Palau, now we’re taking you to Micronesia to find Cresita Esteva.
         Chit as we fondly call her moved to Hawaii with her family before graduating in high school, she may have graduated in a foreign land but her heart is still with us. She is a genuine and a true-blooded Torresian.
         Chit majored in Computer Science in college and worked as a Programmer/Analyst for several years for an American Bank.  After sometime she felt she needed a career change that is more focused on giving than getting more for herself.  Since on weekends, she volunteers to teach the bible, she decided to quit her job and applied for a missionary work and that’s what she’s been doing ever since.
        You may wonder why after her family migrated to the Americas in search for a better life, she ended up living as a volunteer in a 3rd world country? Her reason is simple… to take away some of the people’s pain in their hearts with the Bible’s comforting message, “sweetening the pain” by helping them to cope with it.  As she quotes Helen Keller, “So long as you can sweeten another person’s pain, life is not in vain”.  To Chit, it is a wonderful feeling to give of a part of yourself to others, “sweetening the pain” rather than sitting in an office cubicle trying to figure out on-line interfaces on the ATM’s.
        Chit’s been back in the Philippines twice (1997 and 2001) only in transit coming from or going to some other countries.  Let’s hope on her next missionary work she’ll get lucky enough to pass by and join us in our Silver Anniversary.  We’ll surely miss her if she won’t make it. Or maybe we should celebrate our high school reunion in Micronesia, to be with her, does it sound better?

Dear Val, 

Sorry for not responding to your emails right away. I got an email from Rey, Fenchie, and even my cousin Ed Tuazon dating as early as February. I remember responding to Rey and Fenchie but there seems to be a problem in format and now is just another time that I am able to write to you guys. 

I graduated BSME at PLM in 1984. I married the former Tess Soriano, a PLM nursing grad on January 2, 1988. The last job I had in the Philippines was as the Manufacturing Resources and Production Development manager of Moldex Products, Inc. I left the country on December 2, 1991 to join my wife here in the U.S. 

Coming to America was such an experience for me. I came here at the time when most engineering jobs are shelved because of the end of the Cold War. As you know, most of the engineering jobs dealt with defense projects. Besides, to work here as an engineer would require three more years of study which, at that time, was hard for me to do. I landed a job as a morning crew at McDonald's, then a factory worker at an Estee Lauder filling station in Northern New Jersey, and a job as a nurse's aide in one of the nursing homes in our area. You may not believe it, but at one point I kept all those three jobs and I eventually settled with my nurse's aide job. It was then I realized that I shouldn't get stuck as a nurse's aide for life, and I decided to take a course in practical nursing. I studied for 11 months and as of now, I've been a licensed practical nurse for eight years. 

My life as a nurse? I find it very rewarding, in the sense that I have the chance to make people happy, comfortable, and dignified, especially in the last stages of their lives. I work as a charge nurse handling 38 patients of different diagnoses, some worse than others, all of them geriatric patients. I'm glad I made the decision to take this course. 

I turned 40 last June 7. Right now, Tess and I have 3 "wonderful" kids. Kathryn, who just turned 13 this month, will be entering 8th grade shortly, always on the honor roll; Kevin Robert, who will be turning 10 in October, will be entering 4th grade, he's very involved in sports and scouting; and Kameron Justin, who turned 4 last July, is entering Pre-K this fall. All of them attend St. Mary's Catholic School, which is not far from our place. My wife Tess is an RN, currently working at a county regional hospital in the pediatrics unit. 

My father passed away 8 years ago. I was able to see him while he was still around, and 10 days after I left, he died after being in a coma for two days. He died of colon cancer. 

I became a U.S. citizen on January 24, 2001. The time 9/11 occured, I was in shock, surprised that such things could happen in a country as mighty as this. Being a citizen, for me, is hard to take, you guys knowing how patriotic I am. I did it for the benefit of my family. I'm still a Filipino through and through. 

Hobbies? Well...if I can find time while working 7 days a week, attending to my kids' games and practices, and if I'm not involved with my Cub Scout den (I'm also a den leader in Kevin's Cub Scout den), we enjoy long drives, outdoor camping, swimming, rafting, and target-shooting. Well, as you all know, my family visited Ompong in Virginia recently. It was not until last year that we started traveling because we waited for Kameron to be at the right age to handle long trips. So far, we've been to Florida, North Carolina, Maryland, Virginia, New York,  Pennsylvania, and Washington D.C. This fall, we will be going to Massachussetts, time permitting. I might be able to visit you and Rey, because I think you're about 12 hours away from me. We also have a large Filipino community in our area, and we always have a gathering at least once a month. 

Turning on the computer and responding to e-mails is actually one thing I would do last, but browsing through the class newsletter is one thing I do regularly every month. I'm so glad you guys take your time to pull all your resources together. You guys are doing an excellent job updating everybody. 

I'll be sending pictures in a couple of days. Regarding the reunion, the kids are in school on the dates planned, and if ever, I'll just make the trip myself.
