Calls for Steve Waugh to retire as captain of the Australian Test team continue as David Hookes and Jeff Thompson have also expressed this opinion. Both these former Australian ex-players are of the view that Steve Waugh should retire in order to make way for the younger generation of Australian cricketers.

This issue of whether Steve Waugh should retire or not really began as early as January of this year when he was not selected to play for the Australia in the recently completed Cricket World Cup.This controversy continued when Steve Waugh was selected to captain the Test team when Australia had to tour the West Indies.

This issue was further exasperated when Australia lost the fourth Test to the West Indies. The defeat not only prevented Australia from becoming the first team ever to whitewash the West Indies in their home territory but it also saw West Indies achieve the highest ever total by a team batting second to win a test match.

Steve Waugh's fate may not be known until their series against Bangladesh begins but it cannot be forgoten that he is one of Australia's most successful captains and that hsio records speak for themselves.
