| The One and Magic | |||||||||||||||||
| My journey into the study of magic began with the placebo effect. Consider this well-known phenomenon, and you will see a startling implication: the mind, by itself, produces a physical effect. The realization that the mind alone can affect physical reality is an exciting one, and leads us to ask what other effects the mind may be capable of producing. Telekinesis, pyrokinesis, levitation, and more may all be possible. Through the One, all living things, and thus all living minds, are connected. This may make possible empathy, telepathy, and all manner of psychic phenomena. Difficult, obviously, but perhaps possible. Also, some parts of the minds and memories of the deceased may endure after their reabsorption by the One. This provides a possible explanation for "ghosts," contact with the dead, and realted phenomena. All of these phenomena may be described in one way or another as magic. We may also view magic as a kind of interaction between life, between living minds, and the matter-energy of the universe. Through meditation, through our connection to and through the One, and with focus provided by appropriate ritual, we might access the potentials of magic. It should be added that "white" and "black" magic are arbitrary and meaningless distinctions, since good and evil are found only in the intent of the user, not in the tool used. Recognizing that the One, aloof and impersonal, may seem unsatisfying as a spiritual mentor, Entitists worship and venerate Life in all its forms, and the Sun as a symbol of the energy which makes Life possible. In the abstract, we venerate the Triple Goddess, Maiden, Mother and Crone, as the avatar and symbol of Life, and the Horned God as the avatar and symbol of the Sun and energy. As Magic is neither good nor evil in itself, the Goddess is held to be both Light and Dark, Athena and Hecate, Bright Lady and Dark Lady, equal and identical. For this reason, the Full Moon and New Moon are equally important Sabbats. The Moon is identified with the Goddess because of its role in the rhythms of life. The Sun, our most visibly potent source of energy, is identified with the God. Virtually any names associated with deities may be used in reference to the God and Goddess, as all the ancient deities may be regarded as aspects of the Triple Goddess and the Horned God. Therefore, if you are more comfortable calling them Odin and Freya, Athena and Apollo, by some other names, or simply as Lord and Lady, it is an individual choice, none held more valid than any other. In fact, you may like to use different names at different times, depending on the type of magic being attempted. However, because of the need for balance and harmony in all things, reliance on either the Goddess or the God to the exclusion of the other is clearly counterproductive. |
