The Meaning Behind the Names

Just what was Lucas thinking of when he named some of the characters, planets, creatures and ships in Star Wars?


In a Foreign Language:

VADER ---> Flemish or Dutch for "father"

DARTH ---> "dark" (I forget exactly what language it was in)

YODA ---> Sanskrit, Hindi & Punjabi for "great warrior" (also see English section for another meaning)

PADME ---> from Buddhism & Hinduism "Lotus" ---> meaning beautiful and purity of the nature of mind as well as symbolizing wisdom and compassion OR from Sanskrit (Padma) "Lotus" ---> beautiful

SABE ---> Apache for "trusted friend"

BAIL ---> comes from Ba'al which is "lord" or "master" in old Hebrew and Aramaic, it is often used as a title for a great teacher/craft master or a military commander (also see English section for another meaning)

OBI ---> African, Igbo for "heart" (also see English section for another meaning)

AMIDALA ---> Japanese, Amida Buddha who reigns in paradise. He is portrayed as emerging from the lotus (see Padme) (also see English section for another meaning)

LEIA ---> Assyrian for royalty



In English:

MAUL ---> A heavy hammer OR To injure by beating; to bruise, lacerate

MACE ---> A ceremonial staff borne or displayed as the symbol of authority of a legislative body

CORUSCANT ---> Giving forth flashes of light; glittering

OBI ---> A form of religious belief of African origin involving sorcery

SOLO ---> Made or done by a single individual

BANE ---> Fatal injury or ruin

BAIL ---> Security, usually a sum of money, exchanged for the release of an arrested person; the person who provides this security

RANCOR ---> Deep-seated ill will

BEN ---> Inside; within

AMIDALA ---> comes from the word amygdala ---> The region of the brain in charge of emotions like fear and anger

SIDIOUS ---> comes from the word insidious ---> Working, or spreading harmfully, in a subtle or stealthy manner intended to entrap

TYRANUS ---> comes from the word tyrannous ---> Despotic

SKYWALKER ---> comes from the phrase "one who walks the sky" ---> A reference to the gods of ancient Greece and Rome OR a variation of the native American name/title Windwalker ---> Used to denote a very spiritually aware person of great power

PALPATINE ---> comes from the word palatine ---> Belonging to, or fit for, a palace

QUI-GON ---> comes from Quon-Gon ---> Ancient Chinese general skilled in the martial arts

JINN ---> plural of jinni ---> In Muslim legend, a spirit capable of assuming human or animal form and exercising supernatural influence over people

LUKE ---> comes from Lucas ---> Light

PANAKA ---> comes from the word panacea ---> A remedy for all diseases, evils, or difficulties; a cure-all

ORGANA ---> plural for organon ---> A set of principles for use in scientific or philosophical investigation

JAR JAR ---> comes from jar on ---> To incur blame; be accused

YODA ---> comes from the word yoga ---> A Hindu discipline aimed at training the consciousness for a state of perfect spiritual insight and tranquillity; a system of exercises practiced as part of this discipline to promote control of the body and mind

ANAKIN ---> comes from the name Anak ---> he was the father of the gaints that harrassed the Isrealites

FETT ---> comes from the word fetter ---> A chain or shackle for the ankles or feet; something that serves to restrict freedom

LOBOT ---> comes from the word lobotomy ---> Surgical incision into the frontal lobe of the brain to sever one or more nerve tracts, a technique formerly used to treat certain mental disorders but now rarely performed

TANTIVE ---> comes from the word tantivy ---> At full speed; swift
