Chapter 8

Alexis's eyes snapped open at the sound of knocking. It took her a few seconds to realize that it wasn't coming from her front door but her bedroom door instead.

"Alexis, I know you have to be awake. Please let me explain."

"Jax?" Alexis called, still sleepy and confused. She noticed the time, 7:15 on a rainy Saturday morning. And Jax just woke her up!

Jax opened the door and walked into her bedroom after she didn't invite him. "Please hear me out!" Jax pleaded.

"What the hell are you doing in my house!" Alexis yelled, not believing that he really had the nerve to stand in her bedroom after what happened at the penthouse last night.

"I still have the key that you and Ned gave me to check up on the place when you two were out of town." Jax reminded her of all the times that he had watered the plants and collected the mail while they were away.

"Give it back," Alexis demanded climbing out of bed and reaching for her robe.

"Alexis, please." Jax said her name so sweetly that her anger disappeared for a moment. They stared at one another intently. "Here." Jax held out the key for her to take.

Alexis swallowed hard as her hand reached for the key. "Get out of my house!"

"I'm not leaving until you let me explain what you saw last night!" Jax stood his ground. He was not going to lose the best thing in his life without a fight.

"I don't need you to explain what I saw. You and Chloe are lovers again."Alexis yelled, turning away from him. She couldn't let him see the tears she was trying so desperately to hold inside.

"You're wrong Alexis, Chloe is nothing more than a friend and if you hadn't ran off last night, you would have known that!"

Alexis turned to be met his honest eyes. She knew that he was telling the truth in her heart but she still wasn't ready to admit it to him. "Why was she there then, in the middle of the night wearing one of  your shirts?"

"She was scared. She thinks someone is following her and last night when she went to her suite, someone had been there. She panicked. I told her she could stay with me for the night and I gave her the shirt to sleep in."

Alexis looked away from him his face, feeling foolish for making such a scene.

"Do you really think that I would go back to Chloe after being with you?" Jax asked, clearly hurt by her lack of faith in him and his love for her.

The tears that she had held back broke forth upon seeing the hurt look Jax was giving her. "I'm sorry Jax. I just don't know what to think anymore," Alexis admitted, sinking down on the bed.

"I love you. I would never hurt you like that."

She ran her hands through her uncombed hair. "I...I don't know what I'm supposed to say or do anymore. Ned's coming home tomorrow. I should focus on my marriage. What we feel for each other...it doesn't matter."

"It matters to me." Jax sat down beside her on the bed, touching her chin and forcing her to look at him.

They stared at each other, not speaking. They both knew what the other's heart was saying.

Jason made his way down the stairs of the house with a heavy heart. He had hoped getting out of Port Charles would give them the fresh start he thought they needed.

Jason set his suitcases down. She was sleeping on the couch.

"Carly," he said gently not wanting to surprise to her.

"Hmm," Carly moaned sleepily.

"Carly, wake up. I'm leaving, I just wanted to say goodbye."

Carly's eyes snapped open. "What?" She sat up and looked at him. "What do you mean?"

"I'm leaving," Jason whispered.

"Where are you going?" Carly asked, climbing off the couch to stand in front of him.

"It really doesn't matter."

"I'm sorry."

"Don't be. You can't help how you feel or don't feel."

"I wish things could be different. I thought we could be like we once were," Carly said sadly.

"So did I. I love you Carly."

"I love you too, Jason. You're my best friend," Carly said, wiping away the tears.

"Call him, Carly," Jason urged, before kissing her cheek.

"Take care of yourself."

"Goodbye Carly."

"Bye," Carly sobbed as Jason walked out the door, never looking back. He knew that Carly would never be his. Walking away was the right thing for them both, no matter how much he wanted to stay.

Chloe sat up in the guest room of Jax's penthouse. The moment she got out of bed, she knew she was alone. "Jax?" she called, heading toward his bedroom.

"Damn," she yelled, finding it empty. She knew where he had gone and the jealousy she felt was nearly blinding. She rushed back to her room to get dressed. "I won't lose you, Jax!" she promised her reflection in the mirror.

Ned was reading the morning paper. He couldn't wait until he was out the hospital and back home again with his wife. He smiled as Alexis consumed his thoughts. He hadn't noticed her in the doorway.

"Ned?" she called softly.

He smiled upon seeing his friend. "Chloe."

"Hi. How are you feeling?" Chloe asked.

"I'm better. Come in."

"That's good," she said cheerfully, walking into the room to stand beside Ned's bedside .

Ned knew Chloe well enough to know that she was hiding something from him. "Is something wrong?"

"No, of course not," Chloe lied, fiddling with the sheet on his hospital bed.

"Chloe..." Ned pushed.

"I don't want to upset you. You've been through so much..."

"Tell me Chloe," Ned interrupted, becoming worried. "Has something happened to Alexis?"

"She's lying to you Ned. They both are!" Chloe exclaimed.

"What are you talking about?"

"Jax and Alexis, they've been playing us for fools!"

Carly stared at the phone, thinking about what Jason had said.
Call him. She knew in her heart that Jason was right.  She needed and wanted Sonny.  He was a part of her and nothing could break the bond they shared.  She took a shaky breath before picking up the phone.

Tears slid down her cheek when Sonny didn’t answer the phone.  "It's probably for the best."  She sighed, replacing the phone.

Sonny walked up the walk that led to the house.  He had to see and talk to Carly.  He had come to the realization that nothing was more important to him than her.

"Jax," Alexis whispered.

"I love you Alexis," he repeated.

Tears fell from her eyes.  She knew that she loved him too, but what about Ned?  "I love my husband," Alexis said rising from the bed.

"I know that you still care for Ned," Jax said, watching her pace the bedroom.  He stood and walked to her, putting his hands on her arms to still her.  His eyes locked with hers.  "Tell me you feel nothing for me and I will walk away.”  He ran his fingertip along her cheek.

She looked away from his loving graze.  Jax wiped the new tears that his statement had unleashed.  "You can't tell me that, can you?  Because it isn’t true."

Alexis shook her head.  "I love you."

He leaned down and claimed her mouth.  His lips parted hers, obeying a will more powerful than them both.  His tongue was there, seeking and  finding hers.  He tasted her thoroughly before they broke apart, gasping for breath.

Jax’s mouth brushed the skin of her throat with light kisses and Alexis clung to him to keep her balance and also because she needed to be near him.  He was the only reality in the world at that moment.  Nothing else mattered

Jax lifted her in his arms and laid her gently down on the bed.  "Jax," she sighed, looking up at his lovely face.
