VCW's homepage... as it stands
This is our Pern, for the time being. Name your home-hold, or previous weyr for yourself. I'll post a list, and people can choose to be from there as well...
In other words, your character can not be Sean & Sorka's great-great-granddaughter, or go dancing with Weyrwoman Lessa.
Dragons come in five colors, gold, bronze, brown, blue, and green.
Gold and green dragons are female, and bronze, brown, and blue dragons are male.
Queen dragons are fertile, and Greens are not. All male dragons are fertile.
There is one white dragon in all of Pern's history, past, present, and future. He's one of a kind.
There are NO twin dragons. One egg = One dragon.
The dragons at Vallencove are already smaller than "modern" dragons. (See dragon sizes for more details.)
Vallen's Cove is set in the third Interval, making dragons much smaller than their 9th pass (F'lar and Lessa's time) counterparts. A 9th pass queen is about 42 meters long, so a 3rd Interval queen (here, at least) will be 42 FEET long. The other dragon sizes change the same way.
It is 100% okay for your characters to have firelizards. It's okay to call them things other than firelizards... for example, flits, f'lizards, or 'lizards. We do ask that you limit the number of firelizards that one persona has Impressed. Unlike dragons, green firelizards are fertile, and will lay eggs. We ask that you follow the dragon-rules for your firelizards as well. Gold and green are girls, and Brown, Bronze, and Blue are boys. Please try to remember to write about them in each post, whether they're sleeping, flying around, exploring, or just being pests.
Firelizards, unlike their larger relatives, do not know their names at birth. It is up to their Impressed to name them. Please be respectful when you do this, and don't name your flitter anything ending in -th. This can confuse others, making them think that your 'lizard is a dragon. Once again, the only names that will be objected to are names that are already taken on McCaffrey's Pern.
Dragon hatchings and Impressions will be handled by the Queen's writer, and the writer of the bronze/brown who flew her. Candidates who wish to Impress from that cluch are left in their capable hands. Vallencove is lucky enough to be able to provide a choice in housing for its residents. Dragons and their riders may choose to live in a traditional cave-type weyr, or in a contemporary southern-type weyr, consisting of a small two-room building for the rider, and a wallow for the dragon. Non-riders may either live with a rider (with rider's permission only!) or in a house or dorm. There is a main building, with a kitchen/dining area large enough for the entire weyr population to gather. Small, private hearths can be located in/near a weyr, and larger hearths/barbecue pits are located near the main building.
They Happen. What more do you want me to say? Queen flights will happen, from time to time, so there will be eggs on the sands. The hatching of the eggs is left to the Queen and Bronze/Brownrider's capable hands. You can chose to co-write, or ask someone else to write it for you. There is no magic on Pern, except for the bond of Impression between a Dragon and Rider, and between a firelizard and their owner.
This is Pern, not Earth, so we expect names to be strange and un-earthly. J'nathon and D'vid, while they aren't necessarily bad, they are more likely to be seen as cheap compared to names like C'nordi and R'tonn. Girls' names work this way as well. Megan and Sally are great Earth names, but Maegi and Saylli are much more unique.
Eventually, there will be eggs, and eventually there will be hatchlings. We will need a weyrling master and an assistant for him/her. E-mail the leaders if you want one or both of these characters.
There is no religion on Pern. These beliefs died out long ago when the Gods of Ancient Earth failed to save the people from Thread.
We are currently in an Interval, which means there is no Threadfall. There are still dragons, and the people still believe that Thread existed, and will return.
If you're not familiar with what Timing is, it's what Lessa and Ramoth did to bring forward the other weyrs, and it's what Jaxom & Ruth did to retrieve the stolen queen egg. At this point, I don't want to make any decision on this. If there's reason for your character to know about/use Timing, then tell me, if not, then just don't think about it.
Candidates are accepted at any time, whether or not there are eggs on the sands.
Greens, although they rise regularly (every 4-8 weeks)on Pern, don't have to have any mention in the story, unless it is an important event.
Likewise for Firelizard Flights- they happen. Most firelizards will go off somewhere, and lay their eggs. Queens may be gone for some time, guarding the clutch. Greens will (9 times out of 10) forget where they laid the clutch. Please contact the Weyr Leadership if you want your flitter's eggs to be in the story.
