Centers I ran several centers during my gingerbread unit. Gingerbread play dough (for recipe please see the Fun Stuff Recipe page ) At the play dough center I provided a rolling pin, cookie cutters, a cookie sheet, measuring cups, spatula, and a mixing bowl. Gingerbread Man Counting Game I made cutouts of ten gingerbread men and numbered them one to ten. The children put them in order and then counted out the right number of gingerbread erasers for each cutout (erasers can be found at The Oriential Trading Company ) The children put them in order from 1-10 and then also from 10-1. Patterning I used bulletin board border with gingerbread men on it to make cards. The children used the cards to make patterns. Sentence Strip Match I wrote the phrase "Run, run as fast as you can. You can't catch me I'm the Gingerbread Man!" on sentence strips 2 times. I then cut one set into word cards and the children had to build the sentences again with the cards. They were able to use the uncut sentence strips as a guide. Sewing cards I made Gingerbread Man cut outs, laminated and hole punched them to create sewing cards. The children loved them! Flannel Board My wonderful TA made a set of 5 gingerbread men out of felt and a gingerbread house for the children to use at the flannel board for storytelling. Art I had stencils of Gingerbread Men, brown construction paper, a various odds and ends (buttons, glitter, ribbon, bows, etc). The children used all the available supplies to make gingerbread men. Activities
We spent a lot of time reading various versions of The Gingerbread Man and comparing them. The students favorites were The Cajun Gingerbread Man and The Gingerbread Man by Berthe Amoss , which is the story of the Gingerbread man in New York City. We compared and explored the stories in several different ways: venn diagram, story mapping, group discussion, journal writing, and the flannel board. The children loved hearing the many versions of this story!
We baked Gingerbread Men during the end of our unit. I made a large Gingerbread Man and when we went to check the oven I had it set up like the Gingerbread Man had hopped out! We had a wonderful time trying to find the Gingerbread Man through a series of clues that lead us all around our school! The last clue lead us to our own room where the Gingerbread Man was sitting on our table. We had fun after our hunt decorating our cookies. Gingerbread Ornaments We made beautiful and fragrant cinnamon Gingerbread ornaments and decorated them. For a recipe for the Cinnamon Dough see the Fun Stuff Recipe page!
