At Valley, Steve Feroce scored with about 12 minutes
left to lift the Vikings (1-2, 3-3) to a come from behind win. The section
victory was believed to be Valley’s first in almost three years, first-year
coach Phil Cope said. Valley’s Scott Summers tied the score at 1-all in the
second half. Kittanning had a 1-0
lead at half time. Valley goalkeeper Greg Labrador made 13 saves. Cope said
a big boost for the Vikings was the return of sweeper Jon Stuck, who hadn’t
played or practiced before Thursday because of illness.

Valley to
field first girls varsity soccer team
By Ezera Lenk
Thursday, August 8, 2002
You don't
have to be one of the guys to play soccer at Valley High School this fall. Previously,
the girls' only option was to play with the boys team, but that has
changed: Valley will field its first varsity girls soccer team this year,
with practice starting Monday. "A lot of kids are so pumped up to
play," said coach Rachael Link, who has had her players conditioning
since early July. Junior captain Dru Milliron played on the boys team the
past two seasons. "It's really a relief," Milliron said. "I
liked playing with the guys and I learned a lot, but it's like a completely
different sport." Link, a 1996 Valley graduate, never had the chance
to play on the boys squad. Instead, she played soccer for eight years in
organized female leagues such as Tri-City and Cup soccer. "We felt it
was time for another girls sport," Link said. "And it's great,
because it's another varsity sport." In all, 37 girls have signed up
for the squad and 18 have attended pre-season conditioning drills. Many of
the girls have never played soccer, but they are experienced in other
sports. Senior Susan Duncan is one of those players. "This is my first
time playing soccer, and I am really enjoying it," Duncan said. Duncan
also has played softball and basketball for Valley. "We're looking
good, so far," Milliron said. "Even though many of the players
haven't played much soccer, a lot of them are athletes." It took
several years for the school to sponsor a girls varsity soccer team, but
the hard work finally paid off. Compiling a list of signatures from local
residents and constant requests to the school board brought the team
together. Students joined parents in showing a strong interest in the game.
"We already have our own boosters formed," Link said. "The
parents are very involved. Many come to watch practice, and I am all for
that." This is the first time Link has coached soccer. Her coaching
resume includes stints as a softball, tennis and seventh and eighth grade
girls volleyball coach.
Link first was hired at Valley to teach ninth- and
12th-grade English, and she stumbled into girls soccer head coaching job.
"I saw soccer was there, and not many people were jumping at the
chance to be the coach," Link said. "I was really excited to get
the opportunity." Even though the coach has had the players for about
a month, she likes what she sees. "We've got good numbers, high
motivation and we are very fast," Link said. Sophomore Jesse Langer
likely will be the team's goaltender, and Milliron's sister, Nora — a
freshman — has shown great skills on defense. The offense will consist
of Duncan and Dru Milliron joining freshman Alex Vigilante.
"(Vigilante) is one of our big guns," Link said. "She is
very quick and shows beautiful finesse controlling the ball." The
players like what their coach has brought. "She's really down to earth
and not too demanding," Milliron said. "We all want to work hard
for her." "She lets us have fun out there, and, at the same time,
teaches us good fundamentals," Duncan said. Link is not worried about
the team's expectations, either, since most players are beginners. "I
don't have any goals right now for the team. I want to see how things fall
into play first," Link said. Save, of course, for one goal — a
goal shared by all Valley teams. "We want to beat Burrell," said
Milliron about her school's rival. "Their team is pretty new
too."

**Valley News Dispatch –Staff Reporter --
Valley Girls Soccer Scores First Win – Six games into its first season, the
Valley girls soccer team notched its first victory by edging rival Burrell,
2-1 in nonsection play at Valley High School on Tuesday. Valley grabbed a
2-0 lead on goals from Maggie Powell and Alex Vigilante in the first
half. Vigilante assisted on
Powell’s goal, while Vigilante’s goal was unassisted. Class AAA Valley held off Class AA
Burrell despite giving up a goal on a free kick in the second half. First-year goalkeeper, Ashley Pujol
earned the historic victory for Valley, which improved to 1-5 overall.
Burrell is 2-4 overall. “We played
the last few minutes as hard was we played the whole game,” Valley junior
center midfielder Dru Milliron said. “After the game, we were sportsman-like, we shook hands,”
Milliron said. “We know a lot of
the girls on the other team. We
gave each other hugs. We didn’t want to rub it in too bad, but we were
excited.” The enthusiasm on the Valley sideline was obvious as the end of
the game neared. “We just wanted it to be over so it would be official that
we won,” said Vigilante, a freshman. After the game, Valley Head Coach,
Darrin Schwarz avoided a Gatorade shower, but Assistant Coach Helen Mills
got doused.
