  • Traditional name Cangues d'Onis.
  • Population of 6.572.
  • First capital of Christian Spain and capital of the Kingdom of Asturias from 722-779.
  • Near the Picos de Europa mountain area.
  • 70 km east of Oviedo and 10 km from Covadonga.
  • Located in a valley between the Rio Sella & Rio Gueña.
  • Interesting Sites:
    • Roman Bridge: beautiful medieval bridge built in the 13th century with 3 arches,
      including a large central arch in which hangs La Cruz de la Victoria, an important
      symbol of the Christian Reconquest.
    • Capilla de Santa Cruz: built in 5th century, rebuilt in 15th century. Built over a dolmen.
    • Cueva del Buxu (cave- just a few km from the center of town) a valuable series of
      paintings from the paleolithic era (18,000 years old).
    • Nearby there are two beautiful glacial lakes: Lago Enol and Lago de la Ercina.

    • cheese: Cabrales, Beyos, Gamonedo.
