Visigoths
- Goths originated in southern Sweden near Baltic Sea. (according to historian Jordanes).
- Assimilated Roman culture.
- Principal sites: old roman towns.
- Downfall: too much in-fighting for kingship. Of 35 kings, 17 were murdered or deposed.
- War: wore antler headdress, conical helmets. For the chieftain to leave a battle was very disgraceful.
- Gothic alphabet: 2 rune letters, 25 modified Greek letters.

- Gothic name first appeared in 16 AD “Gutones”.
- 370: Ostrogoths (eastern Goths) & Visigoths (western Goths) split.
- 378: Battle of Adrianople: Gothic army destroyed 2/3 of Roman army.
- 382: absorbed into Roman empire, a state within a state.
- 410: Alaric I sacked Rome.
- 415: capital at established at Toulouse (France).
- 507: capital moved to Toledo (Spain) after defeat to Clovis' Frankish army.
- 6th Century: subdued the Suevi in Galicia (Spain).
- 710: civil war
- 711- Rodrigo (Duke of Baetica) lost to the Moslems in 711 at Guadalete River.
- Fleeing Visigoths were absorbed by Franks & Asturians.
