History of Asturias
  • Castrena culture: (hill fort) 1 AD.
  • 19 B.C.: Cantabrian War: Romans defeat Astures & Cantabrians.
  • Bagaudia: social rebellion against romans in 5th century.
  • Vandals: occupied Asturias & northern Galicia. seperated by Duero river.
  • Suevi: controlled Galicia & Asturias from the 5th to 6th century.
  • 585: Visigoths take control of region from Suevi.
  • Asturian Kingdom: independent kingdom: 718-914.
    • Pelayo: defeated the moors at Covadonga (Mount Aseuva) in 718 thus beginning the Christian Reconquest of Spain. Defeated moors at Covadonga in 722. made Cangas de Onís his capital.
    • 722: establishment of pueblas (known today as polas).
    • 750: Alfonso I occupied Galicia which had been abandoned by Berber troops.
    • 780: capital of Asturian Kingdom moved to Pravia.
    • 808: Alfonso II moved capital to Oviedo.
    • 843: Asturias created county of Castilla.
    • Vikings: sacked Gijón in 844. 858: second viking incursion.
    • 846: León occupied by Ramiro I. 856: León repopulated by Ordoño I
    • 860: repopulation of Tuy, Astorga y Amaya.
    • 868: repopulation of Oporto by Vimara Pérez
    • 882: Alfonso II reconquered first part of Castilla. Burgos repopulated.
    • 914: Ordoño II moved capital to León.
  • 988: Almanzor takes León y Zamora. 1002: Asturias reconquered León from Moors.
  • 1023: Rioja reconquered by Asturias.
  • 1132-1137: rebellion of Gonzalo Peláez, defended by the fortress of Tudela
  • 1150-1164: rebellion of doña Urraca: made bid for independence, but ended in exile.
  • 1230: Astur-León kingdom incororated into Castilla by Ferdinand III (El Santo).
  • 1388: Prince of Asturias (title held by heir to the Spanish throne). Tradition began as part of treaty to end Castillian-English war.
  • 1352: Enrique de Trastámara rebels against Pedro I.
  • 1381: Rebellion of Count Alfonso against his brother Juan I, but fails.
    • 1382: New rebellion & submission by Count Alfonso.
    • 1383: Juan I's troops destroy Plaza in Gijón. Count Alfonso I imprisoned from 1383-1391.
  • 1480: Asturian fueros retracted by court in Toledo.
  • 1608: University of Oviedo inaugurated.
  • 1808: Asturians started a rebellion against the Napoleonic forces & the rest of the country soon followed.
  • 19th century: coal & iron ore discovered.
  • 1856: large meteor fell in Oviedo. 1866: large meteor fell in Cangas de Onís.
  • 1917: general strike crushed.
  • 1920's: mining industry collapsed.
  • 1934: october 4-19: epic miners' revolt. key points: Mieres, Oviedo, Sama. Workers occupied munitions factory in Trubia. 30,000 rifles seized. 1,400 miners killed in retaliation by Nationalist Army.
  • 1962: general strike.
  • 1981: became Autonomous region of Spain.
