Final Essay Questions

 

 

Goal(s):  Students should develop a thesis statement for five of the final essay questions below.  After thesis statements have been developed, students must skim or re-read the text in search of valid, meaningful quotations or references that support or refute their thesis statements.  For each thesis statement, organize thoughts into five-paragraph persuasive essay.

 

 

1.                  In the beginning of the book, Fifteen years after he graduated, Gene returns to Devon.  He immediately goes to two locations.  What are these locations?  Why does he go there?  What does he hope to accomplish?

 

2.                  What permeated every aspect of daily life for the boys Devon?  How did they deal with it (or not deal with it—as the case may be)?

 

3.                  Discuss the nature of Gene’s relationship with Finny.  Recount the pitfalls and triumphs throughout the evolution of their connection.

 

4.                  Describe Finny’s personality, his unique abilities, the effect he has on others, and his perception of the word.

 

5.                  Discuss Gene’s development of self-awareness.

 

6.                  Discuss the symbolism of the TREE and the symbolism of the two rivers at Devon.

 

7.                  Discuss leaders and followers and the roles people choose to play (or are forced to play).

 

8.                  Compare and Contrast the differences between summer session and the regular school year.

 

9.                  Explain the environment of competitive nature and fraternal rivalry at Devon.  Explain how individual talents, social standing, peer pressure, insecurity, and (above all) jealousy play a major role in the events that take place at Devon.

 

10.              Discuss the impact adults have in the daily lives of the boys at Devon.

 

11.              Discuss the role of religion and God in the boys’ lives at Devon.
