Stereo Simulate Plug In

The Z buffer
Stereo Sim Option=1.1
Stereo Sim Option=5
Stereo Render I=65mm
You can see the stem of the sunflower, in particular, tearing up on the Simulation with Option value=5. Actually, on a full 640x480 render, this doubling and tearing can be seen starting even on the 1.1 simulation (although you must examine the edges closely). Compare to the stereoscopic render with 65mm interaxial.
In case you're wondering how I got a grayscale anaglyph out of Stereo Simulate, I simply resurfaced everything to gray tones. Be sure not to overwrite your original objects if you try this trick.
Ordinary flat render
Stereo Sim Option=8.8
How much stereo is in the simulation, versus the ordinary flat render?. Compare to the stereoscopic renders elsewhere in this document. This is why I originally dismissed the plug in.
