Turns out I came here on a college internship. I really wanted to work at MuchMusic and all it took was a great resume. After all the nitty-gritty work I did, I only wanted to stay as long as possible.
I worked under the wonderful guidance of Morgen Flury, producer of ClipTrip and Diego Fuentes, her VJ. Morgen's name (the names of two kinds of wine) was just like her personality; sweet and bubbly! See, she can't stop laughing even for a picture!
After doing all the dirty, boring work which comes with the territory, Morgen took off to Brazil for two weeks. So, while she was gone I went on some shoots with Steve Gelder.
He's a tall, dark and handsome cameraman who doesn't look at all his age. He's 3-; OK I won't tell. He's like Sean Connery - the older he gets, the sexier he gets. I only helped him out on two shoots; one an interview with Paula Cole and one a hair show at the convention centre.
VJ Bill Welychka gave me an assignment - to produce a spotlight. He then took-off to Snowjob and I had no idea what to do, but I did the best I could. From past performances, interviews and other spotlights I've seen, I created a partial rundown of a spotlight. I really enjoyed doing it and I learned a lot. The featured performer on the spotlight was The Age of Electric (aired in May12, 1997), who later played a live set on April 18, 1997 which was also my last day. That was great, getting to meet the guys who's spotlight I had been working on. I had an interview with them at The Cave in Ottawa a week later. To tell you the truth, of all the screwed up band members I've interviewed and met and even carried on friendships with, the guys from Age are really down-to-earth although Kurt Dahle is a little crazy. Todd Kerns, Ryan Dahle and John Kerns were great though. We had supper together and got to know each other. Todd's favorite words are, "I'm kidding". He and I are both fans of KISS. I think my tongue is a little longer than his judging by this picture (don't know why that would matter). He has two little girls with the coolest names.
The Age of Electric are one of the many featured bands playng Edgefest '97 this year in Ottawa at Landsdowne Park June 30th. Thanks guys for everything!!
The MuchMusic VJ's were cool, each in their own little way. I've never
really watched any one of them (please don't take this personally) I don't have cable. But when I met them in person, they were great. Sook-Yin Lee was very contained, quiet and had a great sense of fashion. Bill Welychka flirts with everybody, especially Morgen. And Rick, well, he works on keeping the MuchMusic windows from being smashed in by all his screaming female fans. He wears a lot of make-up too, but I guess he's just really shiny! He's nice though. He and I had fun being goofy.
But no matter how much work there was to be done, there was always time for a little play. Rick and I played doubles on the PACMAN game in the "Much environment" in between his live throws on camera. The game had the key in it so all the games were free. I was playing a great game when Bush came onto the floor. Gavin Rossdale bumped my arm and I died...no, not me like a groupie fan...PACMAN died, duh!!
And on my last day, Morgen took me across the street to the main hangout for all the people who work in the Chum City building, the Friar & Firkin on John Street. We hung out and had a good time. In this picture (from right to left)is Diego, Morgen, Shell, Jamieson, Justin, me and Simon. Morgen and Diego are nicely tanned thanks to a trip to a Brazil for ClipTrip!
I dropped by the Much Environment June 14, 1997 on a visit, bringing my Mom and my brother with me. I was welcomed with open arms, literally. Hugs and handshakes all around. Everyone remembered my name and I was pleased beyond compare. So that brings me to wonder why didn't I get the Temp position? MuchMusic needs a cool WOMAN TEMP not another MAN!!
