Male slaves in Vanir's Fjord

~compiled by chane and zwanga~

"I am a man," I said. "No," she said, "you are only a silk slave."
She looked down at me. "Indeed," she said, "you are a male of the world called Earth. You are fit, thus, only to be a woman's property."
Fighting Slave of Gor, Chapter 17
Slave types

Work slave
A work slave serves the Fjord as a laborer and with serving the Free, but is not used sexually. His duties are to make sure his appointed work is done well and thoroughly, whether it be working in the fields, unloading the ships, tending the stock or doing simple chores around the Steading. He is trusted to serve the Free as well when needed and is expected to be pleasing and respectful at all times. The majority of the Fjord's NPC thralls (our infamous skulking thralls) are work slaves.

The least valuable slaves are often female work slaves, purchased for the public kitchens or laundries. The next level of slaves, not generally thought to be of great value, tends to be male work slaves, usually used in cargo galleys, on the wharves, and in the fields or quarries. Fighting Slave of Gor Chapter 12

Pleasure slave
A pleasure slave (or silk slave) is a male slave owned by a wealthy Free Woman for Her pleasure. They are trained in the ways to please a FW and to keep Her apartments. Most are striking handsome and virile, but are despised on the whole by Free Men. A trained pleasure slave coming to the Fjord might be an asset to the Free Women but he is expected to learn the rougher ways of the North and to work hard and well.

The next level of slaves is that of male silk slaves. These usually bring higher prices, on the whole, than female pleasure slaves. This, it seems to me, is purely a matter of supply and demand. Female pleasure slaves, given slave raids and the sackings of cities, are relatively plentiful on Gor. Male silk slaves are not. The explanation for this, I think, is reasonably clear. Gorean males seldom make good silk slaves. Fighting Slave of Gor, Chapter 12.

City (or Camp)slave
A slave may be owned by a place as well as by a person. A city slave greets visitors, does chores and serves and may or may not be used sexually by the FW of the home or by others wishing their service. A city slave coming to a VF collar will be expected to be an all around useful slave.

Thralls
Male slaves in Torvaldsland (and only Torvaldsland, other male slaves are known as kajirus) are known as thralls. They are usually field hands but may serve an owner in any capacity they desire. Unlike many male slaves they are dressed in the same type of clothing as FM for warmth in the cold North. They are expected to be hardy and disciplined.

Men in the fields wore short tunics of white wool; some carried hoes; their hair was close cropped; about their throats had been hammered bands of black iron, with a welded ring attached. They did not leave the fields; such a departure, without permission, might mean their death; they were thralls. Marauders of Gor, pg 82

Fighting slaves
Not every male slave has either the drive or the ability to fight. Only the most trusted will be allowed to hold a weapon and then only when the Free allow. If a slave comes to the Fjord with the desire and ability to fight every effort will be made to train him to the best of his ability, but fighting is a privilege given to slaves, and may not be allowed in every circumstance.

I have not mentioned, either, slaves with professional competences, such as medicine or law, or fighting slaves, in effect gladiators, men purchased for use as bodyguards or combatants in arranged games. The intricacy of the institution of slavery on Gor is prodigious. Fighting Slave of Gor, Chapter 12.

Clothing
Thralls wear the same clothing that Free Men wear, only not as expensive as the ones Free Men wear. Pants are cloth, there is a tunic of cloth and a leather belt. In summer they are barefoot just like any slave. For winter, a warm verr wool cloak and boots are added because of the extreme cold. Work gloves can be worn for doing chores that require them. Thralls do not wear talmits or any other type of insignia. They do not carry weapons in their day to day activites. Thralls have cropped (short) hair. It is one of the distinguishing marks of a male slave in Torvaldsland.

Relating to Others on Gor in Roleplay

Free Men
For the most part Free Men are at least tolerant of male slaves. Once they get to know a slave they may even be friendly, and it will be FM for the most part that can train a slave with weapons. However this is Gor, and there are FM who dislike male slaves totally and may ignore a thrall completely or even verbally or physically abuse one simply because they can. If this occurs remember it's probably not personal, and that a FM may do whatever pleases them. Do not argue with a FM (or any Free Person), and do not get discouraged. A thrall's life is sometimes hard and the ability to cope gracefully with whatever trials may occur should be learned quickly. When serving don't forget the FM...for the most part they want quick, efficient delivery of their food or drink from a thrall, but don't stint on the service.

…it is my understanding, there might have been decided, however, a generation ago, by one of the rare meetings of the high council of rune-priests, attended by the high rune-priests of each district, that thralls should no longer be sacrificed; this was not defended, however, on grounds of the advance of civilization, or such, but rather on the grounds that thralls, like urts and tiny six-toed tharlarion, were not objects worthy of sacrifice…Marauders of Gor, pg 152

If the thrall had been nothing in Torvaldsland before, he was now less than nothing; his status was now, in effect, that of the southern, male work slave, found often in the quarries and mines, and, chained, on the great farms. He, a despised animal, must obey instantly and perfectly, or be subject to immediate slaughter. Marauders of Gor, pg 152, 153

Free Women
What the Free Man is to the bondmaid the Free Woman is to the thrall. The FW of the Fjord appreciate a thrall that can be both strong and intelligent. Engage them in conversation if they wish, lavish them with attention, show them how hard working and diligent you are and they will respond with their beautiful smiles and may give you an opportunity to serve them further. It is acceptable to flirt mildly with a FW but you should never cross the line that would put their honor at risk. The open sluttiness of a bondmaid is not allowed to a thrall. FW are protective of their freedom, do anything to jeopardize it and you will be sorry. Always be respectful and try to be pleasing, take plenty of time in a serve to make them feel special. This is time to shine and show what you can do.

Panther Girls
Panther Girls are the wild women that live in the nearby Northern Forest. Occasionally a Panther Girl will trade at the Fjord or may even be brought there as a captive by a FM. A thrall will remember that a Panther Girl is still a Free Person and will treat any visitor or captive with the respect due any Free.

bondmaids
No thrall shall touch a bondmaid without express permission by that bondmaid's Master/Mistress, or, in the case of a Vanir's Fjord {VF} bondmaid, without the express permission of a Free. The penalty for such infraction is death. There are exceptions to this rule, as in a life and death situation. Learn this rule well, your life depends on it. Otherwise your sisters in bondage may be your best friends. Protect and help them when necessary, they are treasured possessions of the Free of the Fjord.

"It lies not beneath your sword," she snapped. "I belong to free men!"
Then, with the brazenness of a bond-maid, she, Thyri, who had been the fine young lady of Kassau, threw her kirtle up over her hips and, leaning forward, spit furiously at the thrall. He leaped toward her but Ottar was even quicker. He struck Wulfstan, the thrall, Tarsk, behind the back of his neck with the handle of his ax. Wulfstan fell stunned. In an instant Ottar had bound the young man’s hands before his body. He then jerked him to his knees by the iron collar.
"You have seen what your ax can do to posts," said he to me, "now let us see what it can do to the body of a man." He then threw the young thrall to his feet, holding him by the collar, his back to me. The spine, of course, would be immediately severed; moreover, part of the ax will, if the blow be powerful, emerge from the abdomen. It takes, however, more than one blow to cut a body, that of a man, in two. To strike more than twice, however, is regarded as clumsiness. The young man stood, numbly, caught. Thyri, her kirtle down, shrank back, her hand before her mouth.
"You have seen," said Ottar, to the Forkbeard, "that he has been bold with a bond-maid, the property of free men."
"Thralls and bond-maids, sometimes," said I, "banter."
"He would have put his hands upon her," said Ottar. That seemed true, and was surely more serious. Bond-maids were, after all, the property of free men. It was not permitted for a thrall to touch them.
"Would you have touched her?" asked the Forkbeard.
"Yes, my Jarl," whispered the young man.
"You see!" cried Ottar. "Let Red Hair strike!"
I smiled. "Let him be whipped instead," I said. Marauders of Gor, pg 104, 105.

"Sometimes," said he (this is the thrall Tarsk speaking), "to discipline a bond-maid, she is hurled naked among the thralls." He smiled. "Do not fear. Should this be done to you I, in my turn, shall use you well Bond-maid. Quite well." Marauders of Gor, pg 89.

Thralls
Co-operation is expected among thralls. Help each other with work or training. The life of a thrall is hard, but not unbearable, and your brothers' experience may be invaluable as you settle into your place at the Fjord.

Serving
When serving a Free Person approach and address each one individually, not from across the room...there are no "serving furs". Kneel before FW when you ask to serve them and again when you bring what they've commanded. Remember that heat is not to be openly displayed; however a low-key sensuousness is allowed. As the Free Men of Vanir's Fjord have no use for a thrall on his knees they have decreed that they are to be approached and served standing. Ignore this rule at your own peril, FM have little patience with simpering thralls.

I approached the table deferentially. I knelt before Lola.
"Wine, Mistress?" I asked. Fighting Slave of Gor, pg 76.

Positions
For the most part positions for thralls are no different than for bondmaids. Each Mistress will let you know Her own tolerance for nadu, some may allow it and some may not. Pay attention and remember! The one major difference in positions that thralls should be aware of is Display. While bondmaids Display with their legs flexed and their backs arched, a thrall Displays with his feet shoulder width apart, his hands behind his neck and his head up, keeping his eyes lowered. A male slave can also be displayed by the whip.

The Lady Gina spoke to the slave, Lola. Immediately the girl placed her hands behind her head and threw her head back, arching her back and body, legs flexed, before me. I supposed that it was sometimes in such a fashion that slave girls were ordered to display themselves. for the pleasure or inspection of masters. I almost sobbed with the pleasure of seeing her. Fighting Slave of Gor, pg 67.

"You may now remove the collar and take your whip from the attendant," bid the Lady Tima. "Then, with the whip, display him as you will." Fighting Slave of Gor, pg 170.

Chores
Chores are to be done in the room. Typically a thrall does the heavy, unpleasant work around the Steading, tending the stock, chopping and carrying firewood, cleaning out the pens and working in the fields or on the docks. The Jarl or Jarla or your Owner will give you any extra work assignments or a particular type of chore you will be responsible for. If you have a skill with anything you may incorporate that in your chores as well.

Net fishing
Earlier he had been working with other thralls at the shore, with parsit nets. Marauders of Gor, pg 103

Agriculture
On the way back to the hall, cutting through the tospit trees, we had passed by the sul patch. In it, his back to us, hoeing, was the young broad-shouldered thrall, in his white tunic, with cropped hair. Marauders of Gor, pg 103

He belonged to the class of men who could hire their reading done for them, much as he could buy thralls to do his farming. Marauders of Gor, pg 231

Cooking
Male thralls turned the spits over the long fire;…Marauders of Gor, pg 195

Animal Husbandry
It would not have seemed proper, at least in the eyes of Svein Blue Tooth and others, for a high officer to sit at the same table with a fellow whose main occupation was supervising thralls in the tending of verr. Marauders of Gor, pg 187

Forge duties
Air, by means of a small bellows, pumped by a thrall boy, in white wool, collared, hair cropped, was forced through a tube in the bottom of each. The air above the canisters shook with heat. Marauders of Gor, pg 86

Wood
When the Forkbeard himself rose, of course, the camp became quite active, and the slaves were put about many menial labors; the thrall, Tarsk, was unchained from Thyri, and set about the sawing of wood; … Marauders of Gor, pg 193

Breeding
She struggled, held. She had a fair throat, good shoulders; she was marvelously breasted; her waist was such that one could get his hands on it well; she might have been a bit broad in the beam but I had no objection to this; in the north it is called the love cradle; it was well adapted to cushion the shocks of an oarsman’s pleasure; in the south she would have been said to be sweetly hipped; if the Fork-beard wished to breed her she would bear healthy, strong young to his thralls. Marauders of Gor, pg 125

Training to Fight
Combat will mostly be based on Circle rules, so before actual training begins a thrall being considered for fighting should acquaint himself with those guidelines. Reading the Circle board and studying the spars and judgments posted there is also encouraged. Training spars will be conducted with wooden or blunted weapons to begin with and a helmet is always to be worn. Injuries and wounds are to be acknowledged but minimized as the time spent healing from serious wounds could not only delay training but effect a thrall's service to the Free. If a FM deigns to fight with a thrall the thrall will remember to honor that training by putting forth full effort and fighting to the best of his ability. Scribed spars will be submitted to the Jarl or Overseer for comments or judging.

Furring
A FW of the Fjord may use a male slave not restricted by their Owner in a sexual capacity if they desire, and those not of the Fjord may possibly arrange for their use as well, through the Free of the Fjord. As there are no couching laws in Torvaldsland there are no repercussions to either the FW or the slave as long as discretion is used. A slave is NOT to PM a FW without Her permission. If a slave is sufficiently pleasing and She is interested She will let him know.

"Is he any good on the couch?" asked the Lady Melpomene. "I use him when it pleases me," said the Lady Florence. "Of course," said the Lady Melpomene. Fighting Slave of Gor, Chapter 13
