SvS Biology 2000: Indicators
Your task is to establish a protocol for indicators of pH - this means that you must use a variety of indicators on substances of known pH to work out what the colour of a particular indicator means. Test the following indicators:
- Universal Indicator
- Bromothymol Blue
- Phenolphthalein
- Phenol Red
- Red Litmus
- Blue Litmus
- Methyl Orange
Each member of your group must make a copy of a table that records the colour of each of the indicators in a specific pH range, as suggested below:
Indicator pH 1 pH 4 pH 7 pH 9 pH 12 Universal red orange green blue dark blue Bromothymol yellow yellow green blue blue Phenolphthalein clear clear clear purple purple Phenol Red yellow yellow orange red purple Red Litmus red red red blue blue Blue Litmus red red blue blue blue Methyl Orange red red orange orange orange
Universal indicator is a combination of several indicators, and gives a complete range of pH
