SvS Biology 2000: Indicators


Your task is to establish a protocol for indicators of pH - this means that you must use a variety of indicators on substances of known pH to work out what the colour of a particular indicator means. Test the following indicators:

Each member of your group must make a copy of a table that records the colour of each of the indicators in a specific pH range, as suggested below:

Indicator pH 1 pH 4 pH 7 pH 9 pH 12
Universal red orange green blue dark blue
Bromothymol yellow yellow green blue blue
Phenolphthalein clear clear clear purple purple
Phenol Red yellow yellow orange red purple
Red Litmus red red red blue blue
Blue Litmus red red blue blue blue
Methyl Orange red red orange orange orange

Universal indicator is a combination of several indicators, and gives a complete range of pH
